Q: I have cash in my US$ RRSP and would like to park it in a ETF like HSAV but I don't want to be clipped by TD if I move the cash to my CDN$ RRSP account. I noticed HYGH.US in your ETF model portfolio but it is not like HSAV. Any suggestions would be greatly welcome or if HYGH is the best then please advise. Thanks again.

Q: Hi,
What do you think of these 3 ETFS (XME,XLB, XLI) for the next 2 years and, hopefully much longer? I'm hoping for a 7% position.
Would you invest in any of them?
Is there another ETF you like better?

Q: My Daughter has about 300K to invest. She is thinking of Vanguard Etfs.
Which ones would you suggest - in Canadian dollars and low Mers and in what proportion ?
They will be in registered accounts.
What would you suggest for an unregistered account?
And many thanks for all your helpful advice.

Q: Do the American Muni bonds make a good investment for a Canadian taxpayer? I understand Muni bonds are tax-advantaged for US taxpayers and may not be available to Canadians (?). And/Or : What about the new I Bonds I the US, now much publicized in the US financial press, for example Barrons has an article on the new series I Bonds in its November 1 issue. Do such securities make sense for a Canadian taxpayer, assuming they are even available to Canadians? Is there an equivalent in the Canadian bond world? (Has to be available through online brokers-- instruments are not, e.g CASH and HSAV are not available at RBC-DI but one of the above is available on iTRADE)
Q: I have a small position (,7%) of INE in my cash account with a decent profit. Comments in a recent question paint a bit of a concerning view of INE. Would YOU replace it with another renewable and if so which one?
Q: I note you last commented a few months back. QTIP is close to a 52 week low. How safe is the ~ $ 10% dividend and what are your thoughts on this for the next 2-3 years. Should I continue to hold (I'm down about 8% since I purchased).
Q: When looking at dividend ETF performance, are reinvested dividends included, or is the stated performance capital appreciation only, e.g. Morningstar performance for CDZ shows a 3.5% dividend and a 5 year total return of 6%.
Thanks Peter

Q: I hope to retire in about a year. I'll have a comfortable defined benefit, I've used the portfolio analysis to diversify my investments. I have a sizeable cash amount earning nearly nothing at a bank. I have contemplated GIC's but don't like the idea of having my funds locked up in the event I would like to direct it to a project or investment .
Would there be a ETF /bond that would be relatively safe that would mirror the GIC returns?

Q: I'm looking for an investment to fill a void in the electric utility space in my portfolio. I'm thinking of Fortis. Would this be ok in your view or are there others you would prefer? Bill
Q: If I take a tax loss on these two bond ETFs, can you recommend two others that I should replace them with? Thanks.
Q: zlu follow up question, thanks for pointing out that zlu trades in USD as zlu.u
When i compare performance of those 2 ETFs using yahoo finance or questrade edge or the bmo website zlu significantly outperforms zlu.u over any time frame
If the performance was similar i would invest in zlu.u as it is in my rrsp account but in this case given the outperformance i think i will opt for zlu.
I do not understand the performance differential, assume fx must be related but it seems like too much.

iShares Core Canadian Short Term Bond Index ETF (XSB $27.23)
-
iShares Core Canadian Long Term Bond Index ETF (XLB $19.30)
Q: Back in June I asked about moving some XSB to XLB and you suggusted stick with XSB for another 3 to 5 months. I think I should start to switch some XSB to XLB. Does this make sence or is there another long term bond fund that would be better? Holding period of 5 years or longer.
Thanks Greg
Thanks Greg
Q: On a Risk/ Reward basis how do you feel about ZEM going out 5 years.
When your buying what everyone else is buying you can see what can happen, this year is a good example as people are getting a good beat down.
What % of my overall portfolio would you top this holding up to at this time.
Thanks Gord

iShares Core Canadian Short Term Bond Index ETF (XSB $27.23)

iShares S&P/TSX Canadian Dividend Aristocrats Index ETF (CDZ $39.96)
-
Vanguard FTSE Canadian High Dividend Yield Index ETF (VDY $57.77)
Q: Can gou compare and contrast these 2 etfs. I've always held CDZ and paid the higher MER on the basis that research backs dividend growers performing better in the long run. However VDY seems to be performing as good or better. Considering a switch to take advantage of the lower mer and thus higher divided yield.

Recon Capital NASDAQ-100 Covered Call ETF (QYLD $17.26)
-
Global X S&P 500 Covered Call ETF (XYLD $39.62)
-
JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF (JEPI $57.17)
Q: I have all three in my RRSP account. QYLD and XYLD weren't good performers this year and, to add to the misery, they reduced distributions lately. JEPI was performing much better and they kept their distributions virtually unchanged. When we get market recovery, do you expect JEPI to outperform QYLD and XYLD or QYLD and XYLD are likely to outperform JEPI as they dropped more this year? I am considering selling QYLD and XYLD and buying more JEPI. Thoughts?
Q: Could you please explain what these 'buffer' ETFs are and how they work? I found about them in this BNN Bloomberg article: https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/buffer-etfs-post-80-surge-in-assets-as-haven-in-bear-market-1.1838370
Many thanks!

Q: Hi
If I want to have global exposure to Oil and Gas sector, NOT just Canadian or the US market, is IXC the only ETF option? Or should I buy XLE and add some other ETF which has exposure to Shell, Royal Dutch and other large European big oil cos? My search doesn't seem to yield anything that includes a nice balance between North America and European companies other than IXC. Any suggestions?
Your answers to others' questions seem to suggest that there is some more gain to be made in energy sector. (Paraphrasing here!) Hence this question. I already own XLE/XEG in different accounts.
Thanks in advance.
