Q: I am looking for a US small cap ETF that is hedged to the CAD. I have been looking at XSU. Fundata in the globe and mail indicates that it follows the Dow Jones US small cap RT index but has been doing worse the this index. My questions are:
1) Do all small caps follow the Dow Jones US small cap RT index?
2) what is your impression of XSU?
3) is there another US small cap ETF that you would recommend?

Q: Note to Judith. I had exactly the same issue with my rifs on december 6th. Plus, I had made my Fathers complete rif withdrawal before this date and they went ahead, did it again and charged him tax on the excess withdrawal. Wasted a day on the phone getting it all sorted out.

Q: I’m guessing someone else already asked a similar question, but just in case: Do you still see NBLY as a good arbitrage play after the revised purchase price of $18.50?

It’s definitely frustrating (I guess that’s one of the risks when there’s a majority shareholder) but given the share price has adjusted lower I’m thinking it’s still a good arbitrage play from today’s price?

PCP already owns over 50% of the company so the risk of this not going through appears low)?

Q: I know you don't believe in timing the market but after the last few years i've ended up with a fair bit of cash on sidelines, yielding around 5%.
Post pivot i'm now thinking about when/how to deploy. Assuming interest rates have peaked and we start seeing cuts in 2024 i expect cash yields to start decreasing as well.
So if you wanted to "broadly" deploy your cash reserves throughout 2024 how would you proceed? Thinking some mix of SPY, RSP, EMV (much smaller allocation) as I have retained most of my high convinction Canadian stocks.
Dollar Cost Average monthly or quarterly
Wait for next broad pullback, we know it's coming just not sure when. Can still get a nice cash yield while waiting.

Q: I have had strange issues with my discount broker and RRIF payments.

I discovered that on December 6, two RRIF accounts were put into a negative cash balance, without any action on my part. I was told by my bank that this happened because CRA directed the bank to complete RRIF withdrawals for the year immediately, due to a concern that there were so many new RRIF accounts this year that the withdrawals could not be done in time.

With much effort and many phone calls, this action has been reversed and appropriate withdrawals made.

However, the more I think about it, the stranger this seems. Why would CRA change the rules suddenly without any notice?

I have successfully managed RRIF withdrawals for over fifteen years. I was waiting for significant dividends to be paid into the accounts on December 15 before making the final withdrawals.

I am wondering if anyone else has had the same experience.

Q: Rick Reider is managing BRTR a new income etf. Does it pay a dividend or does it operate as a total return instrument? Are there any income etf's trading in the US that instead of paying a dividend provide capital gains instead similar in result to the corporate class structure from Horizons? Lastly does Horizons have any US dollar income etf with a corporate class structure and if so would you recommend it? Thank you.

Q: Since long duration bonds have more sensitivity to interest rate movements and interest rates are expected to decline next year does it make more sense to invest in a long term bond ETF? And since I expect interest rates to fall further in Canada does it make more sense to go with a Canadian ETF? Which ones would you recommend?

Q: Hi Folks. To keep bookkeeping simple, I like to keep all my equity holdings in CDN funds. But I now want to pick up some MSFT. I have never bousght CDRs ... is there anything I should know. Would a CDN CDR track exactly the price of MSFT.US ? Thanks.

Q: What is your best recommendation for a US dollar and traded bond etf that holds short term bonds of around 2 year duration that can be held for 12 to 24 months that would benefit from a thesis that interest rates will fall during the next 12 to 18 months. I have never held bonds, have US cash and would like to on a lower risk basis park current money market funds into a bond etf that preferably does not pay dividends but can appreciate capital based on a combination of shorter term bonds gradually coming due and interest rates falling. Thank you for providing some direction and suggestions since I feel rather lost in this area of investing.

Q: What is your take on the merger.

Q: Year end soon, so time for some predictions. Wondering what you would guess the Bank Of Canada benchmark interest rate will look like in, say, 3 years, currently at 5.0% Over the next 3 years, what level of performance do you expect from the TSX Venture Index and the TSX Composite Index - a lot of people are saying that small caps are due for some outperformance after many years of underperforming. Understood that this is just educated guesswork.

Q: The adjusted net earnings attributable to shareholders of the Corporation went from $2.19 to $2.03 (down) for the year. Net Indebtedness ratio recovered to 2.06X from 2.47X for the year. Your views after the recent quarter. Does your analysis see any further recovery in the business or indicate selling the stock at this price? Do you thing of taking advantage of this price by getting out of it?
