Q: What are your thoughts on GDI? I've been holding in my TFSA for around 3 years and up 12%. They made a purchase last week which looks good. Its more or less been flat and slightly down for the last little while. I know you like it and still hold but I'm looking to high grade this stock for a better alternative if there is one.  Looking at total return 5+ yrs, what small/mid cap stocks would you rank above this one currently that I could swap with? Some names that come to mind are TVK (not held) and HPS.A (holding already).  So I would sell GDI and buy one of the others, which do you like currently that have greater growth potential? If any others in Cad or US, please offer your suggestions.

Also quick thoughts on NVEI (held in TFSA), time to cut it loose? Thanks!

Q: This Brookfield Office preferred is trading with an over 12% yield and if I understand correctly is resetting on December 31, 2023 at a higher rate. Why is it trading down lately with rates so high and resetting so soon. Knowing that it is higher risk would you consider it a buy for its high yield. Also could it be called for a large capital gain on Dec 31.

Q: I own both and looking to add only to one at this time. Which to add for total return over 3-5 years? Yield on BNS is enticing currently, but exposure to Central America economies leaves me feeling it's riskier than TD with US exposure. What say you guys?

according to portfolio tracking and analysis, I am short on basic materials, consumer cyclical, health care, industrials. im also quite short US and international equities. I prefer equities with dividends that are growing, and has some capital appreciation/growth as well. with this in mind, can you provide your top few picks in each sector please. much appreciated. chris

Q: Hi 5i

I'm asking for a gut feel response, does this "fear" train seem any more concerning than at other times previously in your career going back to the mid 80's (I think this is right) ?

I believe interest rates are closer to "normal" today rather than our recent history but can understand many younger investors having a recency bias. (Even if I was too young to invest during those peaking 15-20% days of old)

Maybe I'm just a perpetual optimist.

Q: Hi, SHOP had a really bad day Today and traded really poorly, sinking almost 7%, perhaps influenced by Alphabet's results and major large techs like META, AMZN etc, pulling the Nasdaq sharply lower. Shopify stock also broke the $68 support level today, which it has held, in the recent past. We added a little to our 6% holding, with a long term belief in company's strong fundamentals.

Analysts' commentary/preview has generally been positive with expectation of company announcing strong results and guidance on November 2nd. What are your thoughts ?

Q: In the event of windup, dissolution, liquidation, where do the various debt instruments rank with respect to each other ie. bank debt, debentures, notes and preferred shares? When there are several debentures, notes and preferred shares outstanding, how do they rank with respect to each other?

Q: Do you think it is a good time to add bonds? It seems the most likely scenario's (slow growth with moderating inflation like now, or full blown recession) will be more favourable to bond investors than equity holders. What is the asset mix you would employ and do you favour longer bonds today? Thanks.

Q: I am aware you had dropped FSZ from the The recent announcement of the drop in AUM has precipitated quite a drop in share price. My 3 part question is:
1) How safe would you say the dividend is?
2) Can you estimate the payout ratio at this time?
3) Is this the proverbial falling knife, or is there a basis for some share price (are we there?) where a buy is in the order?
