Q: With say $1M in a self-directed portion of a RRSP converted to a RRIF in one year (2025), and two-thirds in CDN$ and one-third in US$ would you see any issues with the CDN$ split between HBAL and VBAL and the US$ into VIG? Your thoughts and alternate suggestions please.

Q: ETF questions
1. When we look at charts or reports about the performance of an ETF, does the return include dividends received and net of all fees? For example. The TSX composite had an annualized return of about 5% over the past 10 years but it also pays a dividend of approximately 3%. Is the annualized return a total of 5% (as dividends are included in this figure and are re-invested) or is it about 8%.
2. To minimize duplication, which ETF (orETFs) would you suggest for international exposure if an S&P ETF is already planned for (or does it suffice to have US and Canadian ETF exposure as they are quite broad and many US companies already have international exposure).

Q: Hello 5i,

Our portfolios initiated positions of TLT, VCLT, IEF, VCIT, and VAB ~2 months ago. TLT and VCLT are each at 2% of the portfolio. VAB, IEF, VCIT combined are 3%.

We will add additional funding to the ETF's. Would you recommend an increase across the board or should we focus our increase on TLT, VCLT, and VAB based on the latest talk about lowering rates?

Note: We are treating the ETF's as a stock as we have GIC's through to 2028 as our fixed income (15%). What are the triggers to indicate that the ETF's are reaching the end of the runway and a switch to individual stocks is recommended?

Q: Hi there,

Can I please get your opinion on HEQT. The asset allocation looks to be different from VEQT and XEQT with its NASDAQ exposure. Do you suspect that over a long period (ie: multiple decades), this will help this etf outperform? How would you rate it relative to VEQT and XEQT?

Q: I hold the following energy stocks: BIR, CNQ, CPG ,PPL, SU, TOU, TVE AND WCP.
It represents 12.2% of my portfolio. Is this a fair portion. too high , too low??
If to high what would you suggest to sell. Could you also rate these as for sustainability and return going forward.

Q: For a growthy TFSA contribution for 2024, I’m considering one of these companies. Please rank based on potential gains for a 3-5 year period, with a brief comment on each one. Moderate to high(ish) risk (like SHOP) is fine with me.

Also, are there any other companies you’d recommend I consider and why.

Q: I was fortunate to buy into this stock and thanks for your recommendation by way of including it in your model portfolio. My position has now grown to 7%. I have a high risk tolerance , do not need the proceeds for personal cash flow. Given the momentum I am targeting a 10% position at which time I will trim back to likely 7%. Is my thinking ok or am I being overly agressive. Thanks John

Q: I have ENB & BNS I my portfolio, for the dividend plus with the talk of reduced interest rates, I thought their stock value will increase. With this in mind, do you concur. I was looking at GEI, but I was wondering if they are not paying out more than they are bringing in. Do you feel this is a wise move.

Q: I have a considerable loss in BEP.UN. I am considering selling it to harvest the loss. However, I am concerned that the stock might jump in early 2024 leaving me to 'chase' it to repurchase it. Do you see any catalyst that might trigger a surge in price during my 30 day wait period?

In response to Maureen's question about a tax calculator, I have used the one at Ernst & Young for years. It is very robust and includes interest income and all of the provinces and federal tax.
