Q: Does the following make sense, or is there a flaw I'm missing? For a beginning RRSP with 35 yrs to retirement: 50% VGRO and 50% equal amts TD, EMA, PBH, BEP.UN? ( to increase Cdn exposure and to make a little more conservative)

Q: Good morning,
I currently hold the following Utility and Telco stocks in my non registered account with the following weight:
Utility stocks:
AQN 3.3%, CU 4.5% and EMA 2.4%
Telco stocks:
BCE 11.70% and T 2.8%
I would appreciate your thoughts and suggestions on the quality and current weight of theses Utility & Telco stocks along with your best ideas in both of these sectors and whether or not you would replace or add to any of them.
Looking for some income and moderate long term moderate growth.

I'm 70 years old and with yet a new year upon us and a review of the holdings in my non reg equity portfolio, I'm concerned that my $650K non reg equity portfolio has slowly grown into a "hodge podge" of miscellaneous holdings that need to be trimmed, better concentrated (minimum 5% per holding) along with the addition of a few additional names in sectors that are not currently represented. My current holdings are as follows:
AQN (3.3%),BCE (11.6%)BAM.A(3.8%),CU (4.5%),DIV(2.8%),EMA (2.4%),KEY(2.2%),XIU(5.2%),XIC (33.2%),XDV(18.4%),SLF(3.6%),T(2.9%),T(2.9%),MAW120(3.1%)MAW102(3%).
I would very much appreciate your suggestions on how to best to adjust my current non reg equity portfolio to make it easier to manage and follow. I'm open to adding an appropriate mix of ETFs or Mawer equity funds as need be. My RRSP and TFSA are pretty much all populated with a mix of relatively low MER Mawer equity funds which have performed well over the years. I thank you in advance and look forward to hearing your sage advice and recommendations.

As an income investor, I have the following utility holdings that amount to about 12% of my non-registered holdings: FTS (up 10%), EMA and NPI (breaking even) and ALA (down 50%). I have no need to sell any of these and enjoy the dividends, but as a conservative senior and in a rising interest rate environment do you think it would be prudent to unload/reduce some of them or just hang on? If sell/reduce which should be the first to go?

Q: The stock price of EMA has fallen from $50 to below $40 over the past 12 months. What do you think is the reason for that?
Secondly, as an income investor, the current yield of 5.84% dividend is very enticing. Or, is such a high dividend a red flag in this case? Is it sustainable?

Q: I am retired and try to have a portfolio that pays me a dividend, is relatively safe and shows a little growth. My portfolio is primarily made up of banks, pipelines, telecoms and utilities. I own these listed utilities but am wondering if I have too much overlap. If you were to recommend selling one of them, which one would it be ?

Q: I hold the above utility stocks and can't help but notice the daily declines. Is this related to current and forecast interest rate increases, and/or something else? I appreciate that, like everyone else, you don't have a crystal ball. But is it possible that the downward trend may continue for at least a while until the cause plays itself out? Thanks as always.

Q: Hello 5i,
I was wondering what your thoughts were on rebalancing. I am thinking of selling some emera, which I have too much of, and buying pbh, of which, I need more. The problem is that when I look at Emera and notice that the year high is close to $48 and the current price is near $41 and I figure I will have lost the potential of about $4000 on this sale. That is, if I wait for it to go back up again. But, of course we all know that it may not go back up again. Also, PBH may actually grow faster than Emera and so I may have a better chance of recouping my money on it than on Emera. I don't imagine that you go through all of these permutations of thought when you are thinking of rebalancing. I am thinking that your advise would be just to sell it now, if I need to rebalance. Would this be your advice?

Which is the most overly valued right now, hence my way of looking at selling high.

I am open to your opinion about how else / other ways of looking at a sell (outside of tax consequences.)

Emera is selling off this morning after reporting Q2 results yesterday. The company has also lowered its dividend growth guidance to 4% - 5% versus 8% previously. I currently hold a 3% weighting in my portfolio. Would this be a good time to add to my position? At today's price, I can lock in an almost 6% yield expected to grow 4% - 5% annually. This yield is significantly better than what I get on Fortis right now. Would I be taking on significantly more risk with Emera than Fortis?
