Q: Would appreciate an update on this trio of related companies. The share split seems to have benefitted EVT and ELF appears to be increasing in anticipation of the same.

Q: What are your thoughts on their earnings. Is it still buy, hold or sell. I trim before earnings should I buy more or sell the balance. I am long term investor. I sold since it move so fast up last few days

Q: Now that BAM has moved its headquarters to the US, does it make its shares a foreign asset for the point of view of the CRA? To your knowledge does it need to be reported on the T1135 if the holding exceeds 100 000CAD ? What if the BAM position that exceeds 100 000CAD is held in a RRSP or TFSA, would there still be a requirement for the T1135?

Q: I presently have $50000 U.S. cash that I would like to generate interest on.
No plans to invest it any time soon.
Would appreciate knowing what my options are.

Q: I’m trying to understand the impact US tariffs - and in particular tariffs on steel and aluminum - could have on our economy and certain companies. Tariffs make goods going into the US more expensive which means US costs increase. These costs a would normally be passed on to the purchaser or the purchaser would look to a new, cheaper supplier. If the US can’t produce enough of their own steel and aluminum and since this new tariff affects all countries doesn’t the US still have to buy from Canada? Excess capacity in the US could make up the difference but is there that much excess capacity there? And for something like potash which I think is irreplaceable don’t tariffs on that product just harm American farmers?

Q: Hi Team,
What's your current thoughts on the current Meg takeover offer? Do you still feel a higher offer will come to play? What's the usual timeline on takeover offers such as this as to when another company might swoop in for a higher bid? The offer from Strathcona is open until Sept I believe, but I would have to think if a competing offer is coming it would probably be much sooner than that would it not?

Q: A Market Call guest stated Brookfield's annualized return was 18% over 30 years leading me to wonder if there was a way to calculate such a number by including the number of spinoffs which have been many. Can you confirm or deny the 18% claim?

Q: I have money to invest in a registered account and do not need the funds for at least 5-10 years. I was planning to buy a GIC, but the rates for 1 to 5 year terms are only in the 3% range. Instead, I am thinking of buying ZWU with a 7% return, realizing that there is no guarantee on the ETF price, but the rate of return is significantly higher than the GIC. My understanding is that the utitilies sector is quite stable and the price of this ETF does not tend to move much.

Do you see this as a good strategy to get a higher return with relatively low risk to the erosion of my investment value, given the long time frame?

Also, what would be an acceptable price to purchase ZWU?

You recently suggested VEF for international exposure . This is the hedged ETF which I gather from past questions you don't really favor hedging. Could you explain why and when you would hedge and is there an alternative unhedged version of VEF?

With regards to MDT & other Irish Domoniced companies that trade on the USA markets such as TT, CAN, ETN, AON, etc.… My broker withheld 25% on all dividend payments in 2024 even though the shares were held in a RRSP. I did well with MDT (Option Premium+Div-Net of Tax, Capital Appreciation) and at some point, I would like to own for dividends MDT or any of the other Irish Domoniced companies that trade on the USA markets. I reached out to my broker since there is a tax treaty with Canada / Irland and completed all recommended documents; the broker continued to deduced 25% of all dividends paid. My question is before I pay the $500 global tax collection or pay a 3rd party for advice would you happen to know or perhaps a reader might know should the Dividend Taxes 25% be taken even in RRSP’s on all Irish Domoniced companies? The net tax so far was ~$3.5K USD so it’s probably enough to seek other avenues to collect the Dividend Tax funds. The simple answer is to seek accounting advice which I certainly will be as an accountant my self this will be a very specialize question that will need an opinion issued.

Q: I have read a synopsis of the recent Ray Dalio book, a guy who has a solid reputation in world wide financial circles. He sees 3 years max at the current rate of spending until the a U.S. hits a wall and serious defaults begin to happen,and the U.S. dollar gets hammered.I have no confidence that Carney can make any positive moves here in Canada to improve the economy . He showed his hand today. Everything will come back to his climate change issues, and dealing for years with native tribes, which will stall investment,and retard any hope of significant positive change. So, as an aging senior where do I go to best protect my capital here in Canada…..Gold, bitcoin, Swiss francs ?I’ve been a market investor for 55 years. Seen pretty much everything. I’m wondering if this time it really is “different”.

In your view, today's sell off is not acquisition related. If so, why would stock be down a bunch, in an otherwise stable market, when its peers, which are also up YTD as well over 12 months, are trading as if business is usual. It looks weird !!

Would you have an idea, what is the cost of the Lexica deal and if there is a possibility that WSP may be considering a secondary offering to finance the deal ?
