Q: I guess this is really a basic tax loss question. I wish to sell BNS in my non registered account which is mainly full of large dividend paying companies. Does it make sense to sell GSY ( at a profit ) , sell BNS ( at a loss ) and then rebuy GSY , thus taking advantage of tax loss provisions. It will also give me the advantage of a higher cost price for GSY for the inevitable sale. Should I do this procedure with the stock that has the most comparable gain to my BNS loss ?
Thanks. Derek.

Q: Nvidia has grown to 8% in my portfolio thanks to your analisis and opinion. I have no problem letting it run a bit more if justified. My concern is their competition will eventually catch up and they lose their edge. I'm also wondering about their valuation and that they might be forming a bubble. Your analisis and opinion would be appreciated. Thanks to 5i and team.

Q: Hi Team,

I have read your recent responses on this name...what is your level of confidence that a significant bottom was put in earlier this week? From 1 (run for the hills) to 10 (buy as much as possible)?

Unless there is something really fundamentally wrong here I think the odds are pretty favourable for the bulls...not sure I have ever seen an RSI of 8-9 like I did the other day.

Thanks

Q: Motley Fool published its Top 10 stocks to buy now/ as of January

I have followed most of them for too long …..watching them go up. So, for me its buy now or wait for pullbacks which hasn’t worked so far.

My 4 favourites of the 10 are: Meli #1….NOW #2…ANET #7…TSLA …#3

Can I have 5i’s perspective please. Thank you.

Q: I have a hard time understanding why there is such a divergence in the price of gold/silver and the prices of the miners. I assume the costs of miners is rising at a faster pace than the commodity?

I also find it curious how much crypto is outperforming the precious metals - the only explanation I can come to is that there are many more hedge funds manipulating the metals where there are less involved in crypto?

Q: I have over 8000 shares of VFV in my NR, up about 50%. I am looking to hold for 20 years and not touch them. Unbeknownst to me when I bought them, I now realize there is a tax disadvantage compared to HXS. How much performance drag will occur from the tax disadvantage, and would it be worth the capital gains tax to sell and switch?

I could sell and incur huge capital gains on these shares, but I am not sure if it would be worth paying the capital gains to sell them and buy HXS.

My alternate plan going forward was to buy HXS with my dividends, instead of VFV.

Q: With the prices of some oil stocks down significantly in the past 6 months, do you think that some of the larger companies (SU, CNQ, etc) would want to take over some of the smaller players at a nice discount? A bit speculative, but can you identify some of the smaller takeover candidates?

Q: I purchased BCE awhile back for its very good dividend and some modest growth, thinking it was more “bond” like.
Now with the recent news I am not so sure this is the case. I am overweight in it and wondering what to do with it, whether to keep it and collect the dividend, or if it would be better to sell it or at least some of it.
I could use the loss to offset some of my gains I guess, but I am unsure what is the best move. I don’t need the money, so would probably reinvest the money in another stock.
I am asking for your advice on this investment.
Thanks so much for your past service, it has always been most helpful.
