New major risk - Earnings quality

The company has a high level of non-cash earnings.

Accrual ratio: 26%

This is considered a major risk. Non-cash earnings can arise from many different things. However, if a company consistently has a high level of non-cash earnings, it may be a sign that they are recognizing revenue from customers before the full value of the sales are received as cash or they are not depreciating the value of their assets appropriately. These are practices that inflate earnings, while not providing a similar increase to cash flows. Companies in some select industries naturally have a high level of non-cash earnings and it is not a major concern. However, in the worst case scenario it can be an early sign of performance manipulation by management.

Q: CWB up quite a bit today on the news of National's attempt to purchase. Up 70% but if I'm not mistaken there is still 40% on the table. { Please correct me if I am wrong about that 40% } Pundits on the Business channel have been commenting this morning and the consensus seems to be the government is unlikely to quash the deal ..... 40% is a nice arb play if the odds look good. Mind you if it doesn't go through there would likely be a nasty drop ...... What says 5i ? Do you like the arb play here on a risk reward basis ?

Q: I was watching an interview with David Rosenberg and Ed Devland. They were stating that the Canadian interest rates are going to have to be cut several times due to economic conditions. Can you recommend investment strategies to benefit from this . For example bonds going up in value because of the inverse relationship of interest rates and bond values. What bond etf's ect. Can you give US recommendations also, as it sounds like the Us will be later than Canada.
