Q: Hi, Energy sector has been weak for past few months, for a variety of reasons. Oil and NG prices have been drifting lower and OPEC keeps sending mixed signals. US sanctions on Russia have only produced a muted response, with their Oil finding its way to India, China and many other countries. Oil is hovering back to $70 level and still there is no sign of US ready to fill in their SPR. After a strong 2021 and 2022 (and 1st half of 2023), do you think, current weakness could be temporary and it's just a short term breather ? Or, considering the cyclic nature of the sector ( possible recession concerns ) and history, it might be time to take some profits and reduce the sector weight, from your generally suggested 10% to say 5% ? If so, would you trim equally or in any order among these holdings ? Thank You

Q: I am not a TAX expert but I thought that any option premium collected today should be claimed in 2023 not 2024. Since income is coming this year not next year.

Looked on Google for an answer for this question but couldn’t find anything. If i sell a covered call option today with an expiration date in January, in which the stock is called away, in what year would I pay the capital gains tax, 23 or 24?

5I RESEARCH ANSWER:
The stock will be sold in 2024, so is taxable in 2024. The options will be closed out in 2024, so the premium is also taxable in 2024 (as a capital gain).

I understand that the company has been stable for long time with increasing dividends, but is it possible that it could run into headwinds as Algonquin did? I am wondering if i should stick to 3 percent and put the other 2 percent in hydro one and Emera.. Thanks very much

Q: Good Morning,

Your recent answer on FCIV prompts me to ask the following. How would you compare it to ZDI.
Investment yield compares favourably for ZDI but 3 yr ttl return favors FCIV with an asset blend that is quite different. At first I was going to shift from ZDI to FCIV.
However with the heavier trend toward Real Estate (1.86% vs 9.32%) and Industrials (11.26% vs 23.71%) for FCIV is now prompting me to go 50/50 on these etfs for diversification. Any suggestions.

Q: Can you recommend a few other Canadian value stocks like SLF, with a low P/E, good dividend and little or no debt - it would appear that SLF has a net of about $74B in cash.

Q: Most of the recent news on NTAR has been positive. They seem to be doing some business with Amazon and other large retailers yet the stock is near historic lows. Tour thoughts please. Thanks
