Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: You have discussed bear markets and crashes often in the past as typically short painful spans of time, duration usually as 6-12 months.

What about "recessions"? Please provide your top 5 coaching advice / tips for investors in terms of understanding and weathering recessions.

thanks

Q: Hello team,

Given the situation in the market, I would like to sell some stuff to recover the taxes I paid on capital gains back in 2020. But before doing that, I have a tax question: How do I recover the taxes paid on net capital gains in previous years? Let's say that I had made a capital gain of 100K in 2020 of which I had to pay taxes on 50K. Now, assuming my income hasn't changed, if I declare 50K in capital losses this year, do I get back all tax paid on my 2020 capital gains?

I know you are not tax experts but I hope you can give me a quick and general answer.

Thanks for your guidance! :)

Q: Hi 5i
ATVI closed at $78.20. With the deal for MSFT to take them over for $95, I would like your thoughts on why the market doesn't believe the deal will proceed. And if BRK recently bought more ATVI to bet on the deal closing, should we do the same? Also would like your best guess on ATVI share price if the deal gets scuttled.
Thanks,
Greg

Q: I own these 3 stocks. I would like to own only one for a long term investment, as they all seem to be in the same field. Is this a good idea or are they different enough to hold all 3.
Thank you!

Q: It's hard to identify the market "bottom" in a timely manner, of course, but what might be the best indicators that a sustained recovery has probably begun or is soon to begin? Are there some good bellwether stocks to watch for this purpose? Are there other indicators, such as particular market indexes, or volume or volatility measures, or "mood" surveys, or economic statistics? Where should the primary focus be?

Q: hello
If you were to build a mini pension with 5 or 6 uncorrelated Canadian stocks/REITS, what would they be? Are they all "buys" today or would you put some (which ones) on your "watch list"?
Thank you.

Q: My holding in CMMC is down almost 30%, in a taxable account. It was a small position before, and even smaller now. I am thinking of selling it and taking the tax loss;

1. Would you stay in materials? To me. an outlook for inflation says yes, and outlook for recession says no; which way do you lean?

2. If staying in materials, what would you buy in place? And do you prefer whatever you might be thinking of or would you go back to CMMC after 30 days?

Many thanks,
