Q: Hi there

I have held AR for quite a while but still under water. It seems to have some life lately and wondering whether to sell it and move on (no gold holdings other than this) or wait a bit longer. How do the fundamentals look on it? Any chance it might be the target of a takeover?

Q: Greetings 5i,

I realize that you do not technically cover American stocks, but would value your opinion on this matter if possible.

I currently hold TPU.TO (slightly more than a half position), as well as a larger position (slightly more than my other "full positions") in BRK.B (held in US dollars). I am 36 years old, conservative, and greatly prefer long term holds.

My question is two-fold, so please deduct two credits if you deem it appropriate. First, given the enormity of BRK, as well as its ability to often outperform the S&P 500, do you feel as if both should be owned for broad American exposure, or would a single, consolidated position in BRK be more appropriate (I essentially look at BRK as a very low cost mutual fund)?

Second, if you feel that owning both BRK and an S&P 500 ETF is beneficial, would you recommend holding the ETF in Canadian or American dollars? If the latter, could you suggest a suitable US dollar replacement for TPU?

At present, these two holdings are my only direct exposure to US Equity (I also have XHY for US bond exposure), although I am planning to add a few single positions over the next year or so.

Q: I know US stocks are not your area but I need advice. I bought a position in this just before it dropped 18% after bad earnings and guidance. So I'm down significantly and it's still getting worse. Give up or hold on?

Q: I bought both of these stocks in equal amounts at the start of the year and RDS is down 2% while VET is down 30%. Both have around the same yield. I am thinking about selling RDS and using proceeds to buy VET with the assumption that I will have a better return in long run when oil prices recover. What do you think of my plan or would you just keep both stocks.

Q: On Aug 25 an early warning report was filed to the issue of ADW.B. Can you comment on this. Strikes me as quite bullish.

Q: What are your thoughts on the Indian economy for the next 3-5 years. Could you recommend a couple of etfs - one growth oriented and one for dividend growth?

Q: Just a comment on the changes to the ex-dividend date due to T+2 settlement in Canada and USA from September 5, 2017. Your members may find it useful.

Starting September 5, the ex-dividend date will move one day ahead (only one day before record date). So for instance in the month of August - record date is Aug 31 - ex dividend date is Aug 29.

In September for record date Sept 29 (Since 30 is a Saturday), the ex-dividend date will be Sept 28.

(Added February 22, 2017) Will there be any T+2 impact on record and payable dates?

In Canada, the ex date on declared events such as dividends or other distributions will become one business day prior to record date instead of two business days prior. The exchange on which a security is listed provides the exdate to CDS, and CDS populates the date into its system. In the U.S., there will likewise be a one-day change.

What is your take on Cominar's recent new plan. Does it warrant merit to my thought of switching some Alaris for Cominar in view of growth and dividend security.

Q: Hello 5i:
I can't get a 10 year history on this fund (am presently an owner), and would like to add to it. Can you advise, using opinion if that's all that's available, how this fund would have fared in the period between 2005 and 2010? I've tried using funds in the category, but it seems to regularly beat the category, so this may not be a valid comparison. If its a true high-yield fund, the performance in ANY volatile period should be disma. Can you comment please?
