Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: “Joe” is getting overwhelmed with maintaining his portfolio and is starting to fall behind on autumn yardwork and home maintenance. His spouse and teenaged kids also find his contributions to family conversations rather repetitive and boring (in their words, he’s all “year-to-date” this, and “multi-bagger” that…).

In an effort to free up some bandwidth and reconnect to his people, Joe has decided to reduce the number of securities he owns to about 20 stocks and a handful of broad market ETFs.

Joe is hoping 5i can help him identify:
~10 favourite stocks drawn from its 3 model portfolios
~6 highest conviction US picks.

Joe wants to maximise returns over the next 7-10 years.

Thank you.

Q: If you have $500,000 to invest in GIC's - would you recommend 5 different institutions holding $100,000 of GIC's to be sure of CDIC coverage? Seems like a lot of work to me.

Q: Hi! Wondering if you are still positive on Interrent. Can you please comment on how this company is doing and if you see it as a buy, hold, or sell. With interest rates being lowered do you see this stock improving?
Thank you!

Q: Hi Team,

Apparently Berkshire owns a large stake in Sirius XM. The company seems to be in the doldrums so is there any reason that you can see why Berkshire would own such a large stake in this company? Is it the same approach they are taking with Ulta where they see an undervalued company that they believe has a high chance of turning things around?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jon

Q: Hi 5i,
The BoC announced the largest rate reduction in 15 years (not including during the pandemic) this morning, and since that announcement my well diversified portfolio has experienced its largest single day loss (right across the board) since I began managing my own investments 8 years ago.
I've been looking forward to today's announcement because I had thought it would lead to an increase in my portfolio value, but it seems to have had the opposite effect - in spades!
Can you explain what's going on? And should I be worried?
Thanks 5i.
Peter

Q: BIPC has had a good run lately, do you see much more near term upside with the dividend tax credit changes? I’m thinking to switch into PEY for the greater yield and more upside once we get a change in federal gov. Also I like the ability to write some covered calls.

What are your thoughts on this trade, and do you have any insights on timing?

Q: Hi,

How would you rank these companies based on risk adjusted returns and where they are currently trading? I currently have positions in all and looking to add.

Thank you!

Q: I have small positions in these stocks and I'm also overweight in Canadian stocks, so considering raising some cash to invest in U.S. and/or international stocks.

Please rate these in terms of whether to hold (and, if so, how much patience might be
needed) or sell.

Q: I have held CN Rail for years and it has averaged around 9% including the dividend. Wildfires and labour issues have hit the company hard over the last few years and the stock price has not done much. On the other hand, CPKC’s stock price has done a bit better. Both just released their latest earnings. CN expects its adjusted diluted EPS to grow in the low single-digit range for 2024 and average in the high single-digit range over the next couple of years. Whereas CPKC expects its adjusted diluted EPS to grow double digits for 2024 and over the next couple of years. What other metrics should I be looking at? Are railways still a good investment and if so, would you suggest a swap to CPKC? Thanks for your help.

Q: Divid Milstead in the Globe writes that BAM is considering moving it's HQ to New York. Could you comment on likely implications for Canadian holders? If this is a go; what kind of advance notice might be customary?
Thank You.
