Q: I have to re-evaluate my RRSP holding now that I am converting to a RRIF. Because I am looking for 3.5 to 5 % dividends, capital preservation and some growth. Please provide the 5 best core holdings that can help me achieve this goal. Your reasons for choosing these 5 core stocks would be appreciated.

Q: I am a 75 year old RIF investor and generally invest conservatively in dividend paying companies, but I do like to allot a portion of the investment to something that might fly.

I have previously owned GC and TSGI, but sold both at a loss and bought LVS, which at least pays a dividend. It too, has been a loser, so I would like to know whether There is more chance of recovery with GC or TSGI than LVS, or whether I should just stay the course.

What are your thoughts?

Q: I purchased 300 shares of ENB.PR.V on TSX @$21.25 but Itrade charged me $29.24 USD, on inquiring with them, they told me this PR would only be purchased in USD. I understand dividend is paid in USD . How could I tell when I purchased them (for future) since quotation was in Canadian dollars? Lots of Canadian companies pay a dividend in USD

Q: With a new CEO and board which seem to have the support of at least 3 of the larger shareholders I am expecting they will set a new direction for the company. How long do you think it will take to develop a new public strategy (I would guess that the larger shareholders know in general for them to give support) for the company and secondly to see results. If the results are not to their liking how long do you think the large shareholders would give before a strategic review is requested.

Q: After close Jan 4,BEW withdrew prospectus(i.e. 0.27 financing).This resulted in 0.4 drop to 0.22(a 15.4%).What's the reason for cancellation & your take .I thought that cancellation means no dilution,which is good.On the hand,insufficient interest is negative,Thanks for u usual great services & views.All the Best for the New Year

Q: Do you think Maxar is now a takeover target, e.g. by Honeywell or another space systems company? At its current valuation, including Digital Globe, which they paid billions for, it looks like an opportunity for a competitor and for a small spec position for an investor. For context, I bought a bit of HCG in spring 2017 around $6 believing that it was not going under and sold 7 months later for $15. Is MAXR in a comparable situation?

Q: Good day and best wishes to 5i team for 2019! Regarding the swap arrangement for these etfs in lue of dividend distributions. If for example they had a 3% yield.and say I owned 1000 shares at a book value of 10$per.share. would the distribution show up as more shares similar to a mutual fund. So if I then sold after distribution.i would have a capital gain of say 300$and no concerns regarding dividend? And second question do you see some good interest in this as a way to shelter income or would you more lean towards say vcns or vbal? Hope I do not confuse. Tks Larry

Q: I currently hold both VTI and VSP in my RRSP for US exposure.
VTI is my only US holding (i.e. trades on US exchange) in my RRSP, so it is the only holding that forces me to occasional exchange currencies (US dividend).
Which of the following options do you prefer (feel free to suggest an additional option):
1) Do nothing (continue converting the US dividends to CDN$).
2) move VTI to VSP. (CAD hedged.)
3) move VTI to VFV. (not hedged)
4) move VTI to VUN. (not hedged, broader index)
5) move VTI to VUS. (hedged, broader index)

Q: Happy New Year to you all...my question is with the market down I am looking at adding another dividend stock from you income portfolio. One that I do not own is Rocky Mountain Dealerships and would like your opinion on adding a 2% position to this holding. Do you see the dividend as safe and also do you see further dividend increases with the problems in the agriculture industry due to rail restrictions or is this just noise and this is a good stock to hold for a five year period...Thank you

Q: Hi team,

There is no urgency to this as it is just a question on portfolio weightings given Berkshire’s AAPL holdings. With the AAPL warning last week, Warren Buffett lost $3.8 billion (on paper), as AAPL is 21% of his holdings. Other major weightings are BAC and WFC at about 11% each and KO at 10%. Four stocks make up over 50% of his portfolio, a very concentrated bet. The downside as seen is that one wrong turn can drive big losses.

I don’t follow your portfolios all that closely as I have a U.S. focus, although I do hold several of your stocks. I believe your portfolios each hold 20-25 stocks, at 4 to 5% weighting each, which makes sense for diversification purposes and to avoid big losses on one stock.

Given these two different perspectives, and with Buffett viewed as the greatest investor of all-time, how has he done so well over the past 50 years with such a concentrated portfolio?

Q: In your last response to VNR ( Nov 5) you indicated that you were not too happy with the stock. Do you still feel this way? I have only a 1.8% weight and deciding if I should add to it or sell and put the cash from the sell into CVD and XHY? I do currently own both CVD and XHY but only at a 2.5 % weight. These stock are inside a RRSP.

Q: Do you know when is Apple next earnings call ? I would like to see some analyst challenge CEO Cook about outrageous pricing that pushes them out of the market. Did he mislead the investor on November first when he said that “business in China was very strong?” If things goes really bad is it possible that the board could remove Cook as CEO before the end of 2019 ?
