Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: These really fell out of favour fast. Would you hold? I am inclined to hold and hope for better days unless it would be better to cut losses and get into something that is also down but might have more promise on the upside? Maybe I’m being too emotional and impatient - I am okay to wait it out unless there is some reason to walk.

Thanks,

Jason

Q: I am opening a TFSA and would like to transfer some of my holdings to that account, which I know I have in my RRSP (sell and re-purchase). My thinking is holding the items which offer more growth potential. Is this a good argument in deciding where to hold various holdings? From the following names, which would you think make more sense to hold in my TFSA than in my RRSP?
AEM, ATZ, BN, DSG, GSY, LMN, SHOP, TRP, TRI, WSP, TOI

Q: We have about a 3.5% position in LMN and are modestly ahead. Our concern is the number of LMN outstanding shares at 257mm. This compares with TOI at 83mm and CSU at 21mm. It appears that CSU is very conservative on number of outstanding shares as compared to their influence on on TOI and LMN. Greatly appreciate if you could comment/explain this.
Much thanks to the 5i team.

Q: I am concerned that the next few months will be as volatile as the past month as the US continues its tariff agenda. Do you think it is a good strategy to invest in other currencies. If so what is your opinion of these two ETF's. (Swiss Franc & Japanese Yen)

Thanks Stew

Q: With inflation in Canada edging up, and concerns that tarriffs are inflationary, is it a good time to move to shorter duration bonds? The counter is that if a recession hits interst rates may decrease. What is your take on the timing of all this, and how best to position a bond portfolio?

Q: Which REITs are most affected by potential exit of HBC? Would this have any significant effect on remaining retailers of clothing and textiles. I was once told by retail analyst there is significant over capacity in retail floor space devoted to clothing.

Q: Canadian HISA accounts do not have such good yields anymore. And the income is taxed as interest. I was looking at my 2022, 2023 tax returns and the revenue from canadian ETF like ZAG, XSB, XLB was mostly ROC. If I’m not wrong, thus, much more tax efficient? Wouldn’t be a good idea to switch from HISA to XSB, XBB, etc to park money in the next few months?

Do you know if high-Yield ETFs are taxed the same way (ROC) ?
USD-HISA are more generous so the logic might be different.
Thanks.

Q: In what order would you buy the companies indicated if you were looking to set up a basket of gold companies that have the most upside capital gains potential?

If different, in what order would you buy them if overall high quality was the criteria?

Q: Good morning and thank you for your many years of valued service.

In this unsettled market, investor focus is shifting away from a narrow focus on price appreciation. Are there any available resources to review the total return of a single stock or make the same comparisons of any pairs?

Q: Hello, looking at UMAX, the price went from 16$ to 14$ in less than 2 years. Is it because the NAV is going down because of the dynamics of covered calls? Sould we expect a steady price erosion for the foreseeable future? It’s nice to have 13+% annual distribution but if we have a corresponding capital loss, I am not sure it makes sense. Can this ever be a long term hold? Thanks.

Q: What are the tax implications for Canadian investors relative to AGNC. I believe they are an investment trust. It is my understanding that all USA based trusts have negative tax consequences, such as 30% withholding tax and 10% tax on all proceeds of any sale of shares. Not protected in RRSP accounts. Is my information correct.

Q: In a question asked Jan 2025 whether it was a good time to buy CVD, you answered "Yes, with rates heading lower and corporate earnings moving higher, convertibles we think look good today". In a more recent post on your Income model portfolio, you speak of selling the CVD to buy equities you said "We liked the CVD ETF during the high interest rate environment from 2022 and on, but without factoring in its high yield, its unit price is mostly in a downtrend. While we feel we caught most of the upswing in unit price over the past couple of years, we are preferring to add to individual stocks at this point in time." So for someone who's not looking to raise cash, and likes the dividend is it just as well to keep it or are you suggesting time to take profits, and move to something else? What would you suggest?
Thanks!
