Q: I was interested in Bob's question about SSW, so tried to check it out on the internet. My TD Webroker site had no news and elsewhere, I found nothing that would explain the sudden collapse in stock prices - only a bunch of crappy sites that seem to have boilerplate discussions of movements in price, but zero analysis.

Any ideas as to what happened on this stock ? Where can I look to find answers ?

Q: Further to my last, is the stock price decline perhaps related to an anticipated decline in dividend ?? In April the dividend of 13 cents a quarter (down from .38 in January) gave a price of around 6.50, for a yield of 8%. At a price of 5.20, 8% would give a quarterly dividend of 10 cents or so. Would you agree that the market seems to be factoring in a decline in dividend for Q2 ?

Q: Hi Team
I previously asked if adding Vermilion Energy to my portfolio to accompany Whitecap Resources would be ok. After reading your response (which was favourable to the idea) I did not yet pull the trigger as oil conttinues to be volatile.
At this stage should I buy more of WCP, to average down, I'm down 17% on the name or would this be a good time to add VET. The only other energy play in my portfolio is Enbridge.

Q: The company issued $100M of preferred shares at the end of April and yesterday issued $1.2B of ABS term notes. Looks to me like they have encumbered long term cash flows significantly. Seeing as how the market sold off at 9:30 this morning then bounced back somewhat is telling me that current investors are nervous over these actions. Just a thought.

Q: Hi, I have these two stocks in the energy sector for about two years. Down on avg. about 25-30%. I really have no faith that this sector will rebound anytime soon,but I'm in just for my sector weighting, and watching it go down every month.
I don't feel this is a good reason to own a stock.If you have a good stock in a bad sector you could be waiting 5 years or more to break even.
Why not get out of the sector and at least wait till the whole sector is up at least 10% before getting back in with the possibility of upward momentum? 5 years or longer is a long time to wait for any sector recovery.

Q: Paul Colborne who is president of Surge has been buying shares (50,000 approx) in the last 2 weeks of May.He has been buying consistently prior to this He was the leader of Crescent Point and help build that company before leaving and going to Surge. With this insider buying is this an indication that we should be adding shares if we are not up to a full position. What are your thoughts on Colborne.

Q: HI Peter and Team,

I would like to add a response to one of your previous posts re the stock action in EFN and ECN today.

As you say there can be many reasons why a stock loses 40% of its value in 10 minutes or so.
I do find it disturbing that a short attack or the rumour of a short attack in this case,can cause such technical damage that it may take weeks or even months for the stock to fully recover. CRH was another stock that recently fell victim to this activity. This appears to be happening more and more and the regulators do nothing and the so called circuit breakers employed by the TSX never seem to kick in until it is too late if at all. However these same circuit breakers do seem to be very effective in halting a stock if it going up at a rapid rate.
I know one of your mandates is to help level the playing field for us lowly retail investors and is very much appreciated,but unless the TSX/Regulators do something to curb these destructive activities then the retail investor will always be at a disadvantage and remain cannon fodder for these unscrupulous shorters.
