Q: I bought Roku a few months ago in my rrsp and resp and have lost money since. Do you still like this name? I don’t know whether to sell it now and take the loss or see how it goes when it report, although I’m worried about a big pullback of expectations are not met. I only want to own stocks that are going up and if they aren’t going up anymore, I get a strong feeling not to own them. Thanks.
Q: Intertain Group. How do I check on my shares of this investment? Thx James
Q: I acquired shares of HR.UN twice in 2013 and then in 2018 such that I now have 500 shares at a cost basis of $21.28 per share. So I have a capital gain of only 3.6% now, but of course have harvested dividends on a monthly basis all that time. Obviously I am a 'buy and hold' type of investor predominantly.
I am retired and this holding is in my RIF so the dividend income is very relevant to me.
Is it time to switch into another REIT for the next 7 y or so or should I just stay where I am, in your opinion. If I was to sell, what would be your top 3 REITs to consider with no regard to type of property holdings?
With thanks, gary

Q: Hi,
I have enough cash to add one of these two. Would you suggest one over the other or is this 6 of one and half-dozen or the other choices?
Thank you.
Larry

Q: Hi Folks , could you please tell us what the latest short positions on Exchange income are ? Thank you so much.
Q: I realize you prefer AW over PZA. I have owned PZA for some time now down about 20%....I can't make a strong enough case to replace PZA with AW to more closely match your portfolio. With the drop it is below a full position so technically needs to be topped up as I free up some cash. Can you make a case for selling PZA or do I just continue to hold it as a surrogate for AW in my portfolio. I am leaning towards topping up PZA to a full position and getting 8.9% yield off the div....

Q: What do you think this company going forward? Is it worth the hold?
Q: would you consider Disney to be a buy here?
Q: Could I please get your thoughts on Calian Group. I find the different revenue streams intriguing and the valuation (P/E) compelling, albeit a smaller company.
Q: ECN has been on a nice run since their investor day on Jan 28.
on their website the investor day presentation has 100 slides
clearly what they said has created more interest. Thoughts on the details coming out of the investor day meeting?

Q: Greetings,
I just sold some mutual funds(finally) in my wife's RRSP account. We are fairly diversified at individual level, majority of our holdings are from your Balanced and some from growth and income portfolios. All our funds are in Canadian and would like to diversify.
Please advise, if this is right time to diversify in to US/World markets. if it is a right time, can you suggest few EFT's for 5+ year hold.

Q: I currently have positions in these two companies. (thanks to your guidance) I'm thinking of adding to both positions. Are you aware of any reasons why I shouldn't proceed with the purchases at this time? If you had to pick one investment over the other, which would you choose. Finally, is there another company that pays attention to the environment could have more short term upside? Thanks so much for your respected opinions.

Brookfield Renewable Partners L.P. (BEP.UN)
-
Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp. (AQN)
-
Northland Power Inc. (NPI)
Q: In reviewing the 5i responses to questions on these 3 companies you seem to favour BEP. In examing the numbers for the last 5 years through Morningstar I noted the following:
2015 16 17 18 19
AQN .30 .33 .37 .38 .79 EPS
6.53 7.14 7.62 6.40 12.9 ROE%
4.60 4.55 5.10 4.18 6.44 ROIC%
BEP. .01 -.23 -.18 .13 .31 EPS
.05 -1.08 -.81 .53 1.34 ROE%
1.86 1.85 1.70 2.82 3.26 ROIC%
NPI -.07 .64 .85 1.46 1.67 EPS
-1.85 15.7 22.1 35.6 39.6 ROE%
1.7 4.7 5.7 6.3 6.6 ROIC%
Both AQN and NPI would seem to have significantly stronger results (ROE%, ROIC%). What key data points do you look for in this investment sector? Your thoughts on your selection criteria would be appreciated.

Q: Alexandra has been asking about crystallizing capital gains to apply against capital losses (which are presumably already realized).
If my understanding of her question is correct, she should be advised that there is no need to wait 30-days to repurchase stocks sold at a gain.
Further, there really isn't a need to sell a stock just to offset a capital loss carry-over, as that capital loss carry-over carries forward indefinitely.
You can never say never, but the risk of the government undoing the capital loss carry-over benefit is minimal. There has been talk about increasing capital gains inclusion rates, but that's not going to matter to Alexandra if she capital loss carry-overs.
Hopefully this is helpful to Alexandra.
