Q: Everyone, what emphasis do you place on the charts for either buying / selling / holding a stock? In my technical portion of my stocks during the last month all have climbed above the 200 DMA and most are above the 50 DMA. Most are above the previous short term highs with the RSI around the 70’s and the MACD well above the neutral line. I don’t use them for a buy and have sometimes used them for a sell. During a hold it is used to compare to the broader market. Clayton

Q: Bloomberg had a segment on recently where structured notes were discussed as a solid way to provide downside protection for a portfolio. Energy was highlighted as a good example given the recent decline in oil and gas prices.
Apparently the banks have these structured notes.
Would you agree with the “ protection “ aspect of these notes and how one can buy them.
Thanks.

Q: Back on Nov 2 nd, in answering a question about LUMN …you mentioned concerns about “ glaring issues “.
As is typical 5i really nailed that issue.
Now they have eliminated one of the reasons I own the stock ( namely the dividend).
According to Rbc the PE is 2.6. At the current depressed price do you see any significant upside potential over the next 3-6 months ?
Thanks for your help.
PS I also own AQN which cut its dividend but at least did not eliminate it.
Can we read anything into this? More of the same in the year ahead.

Q: I am a long-time shareholder in CGI Group (ticker: GIB.A on the TSX), a Canadian success story. Since 1996, the stock has risen some 300-fold (from 40 cents, split-adjusted, to new high this past Friday (~$122/share). One reason for the dramatic capital appreciation over the past 27 years is that, to my knowledge, CGI Group has never paid a dividend, preferring rather to buy back shares most years. I am curious, given the Canadian federal government's announcement re: taxing share buybacks (beginning in 2024, I believe), how you feel this might affect CGI share buyback policy in particular, as well as for other Canadian companies, in general.

Q: Hi,
Based on the questions pertaining to taxable dividends, and managing an income portfolio for my elderly parents, is there a substantial difference in tax treatment, if the above funds are held in a cash account? I was fortunate enough to get DIR.UN into a TFSA and am slowly moving AW into a TFSA as well. Do I take out the growthier names in the TFSA’s and move in the ETF’s or just let them go in a cash account?

Q: Good morning
Having slowly raised my cash position recently and still not ready to jump back in as I believe the market will go lower later this year. Could you list a few places to park these funds ranking from best return/conviction

Q: ENGH was suggested as a mini CSU many years ago and has turned out to be a mediocre performer. Do you see a chance of being taken private? Please also advise a sell or hold in my RRIF account holding. Thank you. Bill.
Q: I believe insiders have been buying TOI around $70 in late December. Based on this, do you think the current $75 price is worth buying ahead of the Feb 7 Q4 earnings announcement?
Organic revenue growth seems to be down in the past year. Would there be a reason for this, and is it a cause for concern?
TOI is said to be the same size as CSU was in 2013/14. Are there some metrics that compare the valuation of TOI today to CSU then?....perhaps Price to Cashflow, or some better comparison? Or is this an apples to oranges comparison because of geographic operational differences?

Q: I need income. I'm bullish on oil. I'm trying to decide between encc & nrgi. Nrgi holds mostly US stocks which could be a tax problem. I don't mind giving up some upside for a covered call strategy.
Maybe a combination of both?
Thank you.

Q: Hi 5i Team - With Shopify's recent upward momentum, is it now trading at a high multiple. Also do you think that its growth is slowing. In addition I have read that it is trying to be more like Amazon and therefore has to spend a lot more money. Do you feel this statement has any merit. Thanks.

Q: I have an unregistered account with about 12 CDN blue chip stocks. The purpose of the account is to generate dividend income for the next several decades, while providing slow and steady capital growth.
I have taken the decision to exit ENB, LIF, NTR and TCL.A and to increase holdings in AQN, NPI, PMO205, XTR.
I know timing will never be perfect, but just looking for some timing guidance due to current market conditions and cyclicality of some of these stocks.
Trying to avoid horrible hindsight commentry: that was OBVIOUSLY a poor time to make that change....

Q: I know governments are pushing evs hugely. When you really look into it with rare earth supply, grid and power systems etc couldnt this industry fail bigtime. I know its a hot sector but risk seems to outweigh it. Thoughts?
