Q: A recent article by Larry Bermann in the Globe suggested that infrastructure spending to " repair potholes and bridges" would produce limited economic benefit because of the short term nature
of this spending.Money would be better spent on educating people
to adapt to the future realities of employment. In the interim
he has suggested allocating funds to ZWU as a an income source.
Another columnist suggests avoiding ZWU and sticking with ZUT
because of better long term growth.
What is your opinion of impending infrastructure spending and should ZWU be considered over ZUT? Thanks, Joe

Q: Many analysts are predicting a turnaround in the oil services industry. The stocks seem to be anticipating this. You have recommended CEU. Has it moved to high for an investment at this time? Also, what do you think of ESI? It has an attractive dividend.

Q: I took a small position in this company almost 2 yrs ago and watched it drop like a stone. I hung in and since July it has taken off. Today they released a very flowery report stating significant cost cutting and time saving in drilling, new fracing technology etc. It all seems too good to be true. I am worried that this is a typical pump and dump. So far they have drilled several positive wells that are shut-in awaiting pipeline tie-in infrastructure. I read your comments to another question from another person in oct. and you were un-impressed.
Is there somithing here or should I run

Q: Spartan Energy (spe) increased their production about 50% from 13,000 boe to 20,000. They increased their share count to 500 million after selling 170 million @$3. However, they onlyused $200M of cash and borrowing to pay for the $700M purchase. Does it seem logical that this company has grown from a $3 stock to as $4.50 stock overnight and, if so, how long do you predict it may take to get there?
Thank you.

Q: Freehold and Pembina are my 2 largest energy sector holdings and energy is 23% of my portfolio. FRU at 6.7% and PPL at 7.9%. Surge and Whitecap are the 2 smallest holdings. SGY at 1.8% and WCP at 1.0%. Need to reduce my energy sector. Should I reduce my holdings in FRU and PPL and keep SGY and WCP or should I just sell SGY and WCP and reduce either FRU or PPL.
Appreciate your assisstance.

Q: Good afternoon, Peter & Co.
Considering your recent comments and analysis would you recommend that I sell my SIA and buy EXE? Also, I have had a decent run with CNE and it may now be overvalued. I am slightly underweight in the energy sector. Would you recommend selling CNE and moving to different energy company? I own High Arctic and Brookfield Renewable as well as small positions in Tourmaline and Crius. Dividends are not very important to me. I am underweight in the energy sector.
With appreciation.

Q: Hello Peter et al.

What is your opinion of the latest 3rd Q results released today? Looks like they did some additional hedging out to the end of 2017. Stella is now predicted to start by the end of this month. It had a nice run-up today in Canada but not much movement in the SP in the U.K. Hopefully it continues to go higher.

Regards,

Brendan

Q: I am an 87 yr old retiree living on dividend income. I have a reasonable holding of CPG in both my regular investment account and also in my TFSA, both of which are currently in substantial loss positions. Obviously, a recovery is in large part dependent on the price of oil. At my age it doesn't look likely that I will recover my losses. I'm thinking of selling the shares in my investment account & using the loss to shelter some gains. If there is an excess, I may sell some of a profitable holding and then buy those back after the 30 day period [a strategy I have used before]. I'm also wondering if I should bite the bullet and switch my holding in the TFSA to something else. Should I sell now or is there a reasonable chance of a substantial increase in value in, say, the next year.
Thanks.

Q: Hi, Parkland Fuel stock continues to get pounded every day since its recent earnings release, losing over 10% of its value. It was mentioned as a baby Alimentation Couche Tard. Today, ATD.b stock price also showed considerable weakness. I have just started to wonder if there is a rotation out of these consumer names which have done well in past. And, if so, do you see this trend persisting, since money seems to be moving into banks, industrials and energy/material stocks. I have a small position in ATD.b but just doubled my PKI holding to overweight and feel a little concerned. Thanks for your valued advice.
