Q: Merry Christmas to you folks
I have held Onex for many years and done well by it. I could add to it to bring it up to full position in a well diversified low risk portfolio. Just wondering about timing. I hear BNN guests talk about good times and bad times in the cycle to buy private equity type companies like Onex and KKR. Just wondering if this is a good time or better to wait for setback in market.

Thanks Stuart

Q: My portfolio is light in the financial sector (CXI) and and I was thinking of adding GS at about half position (25K) to my RRSP and/or cash account for at least a 5 year hold, likely much longer. Although the yield is very attractive, I would prefer more growth. I am about 5 years from retirement and will be fully funded from other sources. I have slightly above moderate risk tolerance. Please suggest 2-3 stocks from each Canada and US, and if possible provide a rating. Thanks.

Q: I recently heard an investment advisor outline the importance of diversifying beyond “public” equity and also invest in “private” equity (he was quoting the huge amount of private equity that public pension plans typically hold). Do you agree with this thesis and do you have any suggestions on how a retail investor could invest in private equity? Would buying a company like Onex be a good way to gain exposure to private equity?

Q: A recent article by Thane Stenner in ROB suggests private equity as a natural hedge to swings in public equity and that the "smart money" which he implies is High Net Worth individuals are shifting more assets to private from public. For someone who is presently an aspiring member to the HNW club what would you suggest to participate in this area? I am currently holding both OCX and BAM, and looked at CVG (too illiquid), all of which have some fingers in this pie. Thanks, J.
