Q: My question is about the increase capital gains tax.

Assume a corporate account has a
$100,000 capital gain on 3 stocks at this time.
Would one be better off selling and buying those back before the June deadline and saving an estimated $6,000 or just staying put and let the stocks grow and pay the increased tax at a later date when sold.?

I realize their are many assumptions but I'm interesting in a general opinion on a hypothetical scenario.

Q: Hi Team,
In reference to a Gsy question answered today you were asked “how high can Gsy share price go? “. An open ended question with no time frame. You answered $250. Is that this years target? Or next years ? As a general rule can it be assumed that a company share price should follow the earnings growth over time? In which case Gsy should be a $1000 stock within 7-8 yrs roughly with today’s earnings growth rate compounded, for example .

Can a person transfer an RRSP in kind to a RRIF?

Currently my wife has a LIRA, TFSA and an RRSP.

She will start drawing down on her investments in two years.

I’ve read somewhere that if you transfer the RRSP into a RRIF that you are not subject to withholding tax.

While I understand that taxes will need to be paid eventually, I would rather settle that up at tax time and can do that out of any account.

Q: I have a few small and midcap Canadian stocks which are down 20-30% since Covid hit. Well Health is an example. I’ve been thinking of trimming at a loss to put the funds into something performing better today. I still have confidence in companies such as Well Health and am in no hurry to trim. I understand each stock is down due to a range of different factors but the underlying theme might be capital flight from smaller growth companies. My question is what might be the impact on small and midcap Canadian stocks if the BofC lowers rates June 5 and again in the next few months. Is this enough of a spark to see these stocks see any kind of recovery in the next 12 months?

Q: Retired, dividend income investor. From a value point of view, which has more rebound potential....FTS or ZUT? Ya, I know...single company vs ETF, so tough to compare. I own both and have mostly full positions, with a top up in mind for both. Just wondering which one to do first...I am leaning towards ZUT.

When I look at the charts over various timeframes, it looks to my amateur eyes, that ZUT is much more closely tied to interest rate changes. It looks like ZUT started to really take it on the chin during 2022 when interest rates were being cranked up. Also, I am hearing/reading that the worst might be over for the renewables and they might start to rebound...which would benefit ZUT (for the record, I am overweight Eric's NNRG, so I have that end of the Utility-Energy spectrum covered).

Your thoughts?

Q: Hello Peter,
Other than Jason Donville's negative comments on Propel, could the insider selling be another reason for downward movement of the stock. I do find it surprising that insiders sold quite a bit, at much lower than the peak price. Could this be due to the stock options being vested on that particular date? Q: what did you make of bns quarterlies? This stock has been a laggard for over 10 years and dividend increase yearly does not even keep up with inflation. They usually increase dividend this quarter [albeit very small] but this quarter have kept dividend the same . I realize they pay a 6.5% dividend but as a shareholder you would like to
see a rising dividend yearly especially if price has done nothing for years. What do you
think as a dividend investor.
