Q: Hello 5i Research Team,
In the investment world, as in life, one has to have an objective. Before starting to invest a few years back, I followed the advice of Yogi Berra who is known to have said: « If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll find yourself somewhere else ».
My first task was therefore to determine a specific objective, a specific compound annual return target ; that was and still is my prime reference.
Later on, I identified Jason Donville’s DKAM Portfolio as another benchmark ; a few years later, I became a member of 5i Research and the Balanced Equity portfolio became yet another benchmark. Both use different stock filtering methodologies that are quite complementary ; after all, that’s what makes a market.
For your info, since its inception date in mid-March 2013 to the end of February 2016, the 5i BE portfolio returned 86.1% (or 23% pa) ; for the same period DKAM returned 67.5% (or 19% pa)...and I handily beat my personal objective.

Q: Hello to everyone at 5i

With acknowledgment to the variations in the businesses in each of KXS, CSU and GOOGL, is there a clear winner amongst these 3 for a long term hold?

Q: Hi team,
I think I kind of understand but just for sake of certainty:
1- What does it mean when the status on a given stock is HOLD? Does it mean: don't sell if you have it or don't buy if you don't have it?

2- What is the difference between Indicated Annual Dividend and Dividend Yield? For example, BDI right now has each of these at $0.60 and 13.57%, respectively. Let's say I buy 100$ worth of stock at $4.00 today, how much would I earn in dividend in one year if the dividend does not change in one year? With a big thank you! :)

Q: i just want solid dividend paying companies. id like your take on the economy. are the policy makers playing games with the value of our currency ?id like to hold stocks for long term and let the drips accumalte is this an ok stategy or do i constantly have to have cash and buy gold etc if gold is the next best area what do you recommend

Q: Hi, Can you please comment on ESL earnings release. Looks like Revenue, EPS were a bit shy of street estimates. is this mainly due to CIT related expenses? You had mentioned that CIT was the 2nd largest acquisition in company history ? How is it likely to contribute to future results ? Did FX play a role in current earnings? I just started a new position today @ $57.25. What are your thoughts on valuation and market perception of results ? Thanks

Q: In addition to my previous question if this stock drops do you have a price that if Enghouse went below it would be a table pounding buy? Reading through some past reports the company consistently states that operating results fluctuate between quarters and I'm guessing this is one of those quarters where things fluctuated below expectations.

How much weight would one put into Sadler selling some shares in the 70s a few months back to foresee recent movements in Enghouse stock? Is the drop at the end of trading Wednesday March 9 suspicious and does the OSC monitor such activity?

Q: I own parex and rrx, want to add your top pick in smaller to mid oil and gas stock assuming oil goes to 50 by year end.would surge be it or whitecap or something else. This would not be a long term hold. Dividend not important.Dave

Q: I own Surge Energy which is down 54% and presently represents 1% of my portfolio. I want to slowly build up this sector by starting to buy again into Surge but I thought I should also add another name and keep the 2 within the overall 5% range of the total. What other name would you recommend. Thanks. Gerry

Q: The company has released it's 4th quarter results and management seems to be confident they can afford the dividend although many of the financial metrics seem to have declined. I am wondering what your thoughts are? I couldn't see a cash flow in the release.
