Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: 5iteam: Retired income seeking investor that anckored my portfolio with VRIF for reasonable stability with a 4% yield. I am down currently 8% and maybe counting. Can you give me your perspective on what and why with a 50/50 split to stocks and bonds performance has suffered? Would you consider it a good hold for my needs or suggest another prospect with more potential and security worth tacking a loss for the switch? As usual much appreciated Larry

Q: I see the VIX is around 35 today (May 2/22). I seem to remember that it was reasonable to consider to start buying again when it hit 40. Your thoughts?

Thanks...Steve

PS...Please remember to ring the bell when we hit bottom.

Q: All four of these companies seem to be interest sensitive & are dropping a lot. NWH.UN is still up 15%,TIXT is down 25 %, while IIP.UN is even & DIR.UN is down 18%. Should I sell because of the announced & upcoming interest raises or continue to hold them? They all appear to be good companies but are being swept along by the tide of selling. Thanks

Q: Hi 5i,

Has there ever been a time (in relatively modern history) that the central banks have actually been raising rates in a recession?

For all the talk the banks have done about raising rates, very little has actually been done.

Thanks!
David

Q: I am down significantly in these stocks. Are any of these outright sell or add to average down. I am not panicking yet and ok to hold for some time. Your opinion please. Thanks

Q: re your reply to a question today:
The issue in the current environment, however, is whether raising rates actually impacts the specific inflationary items we are seeing today (such as those caused by supply chain issues and the war).

Great point. You don't heard much discussion on that. If raising rates will not dampen inflation, then the Fed may just stop raising the rates. Don't these rate hikes add to the interest costs to government borrowing? Gov't debt is much more of as concern than private debt. The US has committed to to huge infrastructure spending. And that was before the war in Ukraine. Military spending has to increase. At the least, all those weapons have to be replaced.

Q: Two related questions. I purchased SLF several months ago as a hedge against inflation. Since then, the stock has done nothing but decline and I am now down 12%. Please explain why it is performing so poorly now and provide thoughts on how it could potentially be impacted by a recession. Still with finance, would GSY (despite its smaller size) have generally the same economic drivers as the Big Five banks? Thank you.
