Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Hi,
Could you please recommend 10 (5 US / 5 CAN) high-quality defensive companies with strong balance sheets, low debt levels, and robust cash flows that YOU believe they can weather economic stress, inflation, or stagflation and they relatively hold up their stock prices during such times? If their current stock prices are overvalued, please suggest your recommended entry prices.

Also please recommend ETFs that mainly invest in companies with the above criteria?

Thank you

Q: Entegris seems to be in an interesting niche in the semi space, providing specialty engineered chemicals and materials required in the manufacturing process.

Stanley Druckenmiller recently initiated a new position.

Revenues have shrunk 2% over the past year. Wouldn't you expect that with the huge cap ex spend going towards AI right now that they'd be growing? Other semis like KLAC, ASML, LRCX have grown revenues ~25% over the same period.

Why hasn't ENTG participated in this?

Q: My previous question about PNG was classed as private and I was directed to previous questions already asked, implying I would get information I was looking for. My question referred to the call that was scheduled later in the morning. The question already asked about PNG was posted before the call. Can you comment on the call? Was guidance positive and encouraging? Or was it muted and cause for concern? And is it still one of your top small growth picks?

Q: I'm looking for an ETF that complements my VDY. In particular I'd like yield with some growth, and fairly defensive. I don't mind which is greater, yield or growth. I've spotted VIDY, and it looks good, and might complement my VDY in that it is similar but EX North America. I suppose the yield is not Div Tax Credit, so if there is a Canadian ETF that complements VDY, in the sense of holdings, I'd consider that too. But the Tax Credit is not essential, so a US complement (sold in Canada) might work also. So complementary to VDY in terms of geography or holdings would be good.

Q: What do you think about going into cash until the end of September? I understand that for most people, the advice is to stay invested and weather the course to avoid missing up days. I also appreciate that you do not advocate market timing. However, my thinking is as follows:

a) historically September is a poor month for the markets - 55-60% of the time the market is down in September;

b) since we've had an excellent year, maybe the odds of a draw down are higher this year. It also appears that the USA may not provide a rate cut due to inflationary pressures which would be a big disappointment;

c) selling now protects gains from a pullback. While this does incur a tax liability, I would rather have a big gain and pay tax than suffer a draw down (and miss the change to buy back lower);

d) if one is in cash, any pull back present golden buying opportunities;

What are your thoughts?

Q: Tenaz was a top pick this week on BNN Market Call and Bruce Campbell made some compelling argument. I see three past 5i responses to members questions spaced about a year apart that all seemed generally favourable with the small cap/commodity cyclicality risk noted. Since the last of those comments was about a year ago, can I ask for the annual update? (I note the stock popped about 5% at the time of broadcast). Thanks.
