Q: In the last five days, the S&P is down 1.58% while the TSX is down 3.29% (as per G&M). I'm curious about why Canada's stock market, heavy with oil companies, would fare worse than the US, which is actually the one at war. Any ideas?
Q: Firstly apologies to the 5i membership. I saw what I thought was a great chart in TER and then a long term recommendation from 5i. My purchase just so happens to be the start of a 20% decline. Any concerns? Do you still have the same conviction?
Q: Based on responses to previous questions on PNG's acquisitions, I'm trying to understand the dynamics of what might happen to the stock price going forward. The closing of the new share issue at $8.50 should close around March 12 and if I have it right, the shares will be active when the deal closes, expected in the April - June timeframe. The new issue has brought the share price down to the issue price as you previously indicated it could. Once the issue closes this week, is the weight lifted from the stock price and could it start to react positively or negatively to the deal? It seems the market likes the deal so is it reasonable to assume the share price might start recovering the 75 cents it lost starting after issue close? I realize there are no absolute rules as to what might/will happen.
Q: How do you feel about SIKA, a Swiss materials company? It can be purchased as a CDR (CAD hedged). It has an 8% CAGR for revenue and EPS for the last 5 years and pays a dividend of 2.5% at its current price of CAD$6.70. I am looking for quality international individual stocks and this looks like one.
Q: Hello, I just realized there is an ETF covering drone makers, DRNZ. It is a new ETF, but what is your opinion of its holdings? Any other comments? Thanks
Q: Hi Folks,
I am looking at adding one of WCP or CNQ to my RRSP and TFSA accounts. May I have your opinion as to which one you would recommend for each account.
Thanks
Q: Is there an ETF where you can short crude oil on a longer term basis? What would likely happen if you purchased this ETF if the price of crude hit $105 and you held it for a few months and theoretically the crude price dropped to $80. Would this ETF work for a longer period of time or is it only meant for short term fluctuations? Do you have any other ideas for this type of trade without using futures?
Thanks
I've recently read two investment articles suggesting that the memory chip rally may likely have peaked. As I hold Micron and Teradyne, I'm wondering if you can share your thoughts on the subject. Thanks very much.
I like what I am reading about TER and your thoughts from 5I's Q&A. The stock price has recently retreated with the tech selloff, and I am looking to nibble slowly. At what price would you jump in?
Thank you as always for the wonderful commentary and the great questions posted from the 5i community. Cheers.
Q: Hi 5i,
I can't tell if Tou missed numbers or not on their earnings (top and bottom lines)? Also, assuming my numbers are accurate, the annual payout for tourmailne seems to be in a downward trend:
year Annual payout
2021 1.42
2022 7.90
2023 6.55
2024 3.32
2025 3.30
while the base rate has increased, the special dividends have only gone down since 2022.
Has their financial picture increased since 2022?
Tia!
Q: What companies do you see benefitting from LNG sales to Europe and other potential trading partners? Has there been a noticeable run up in anticipation of this potential?
Thank you
Q: Hello,
When does it make sense to borrow from a line of credit for non-reg assets vs contributing after-tax cash to an RRSP?
I don’t want my taxable income in retirement to be any higher than it is projected to be.
I also have access to a line of credit right now.
You mentioned recently:
“ Typically investors look for more stable and reliable dividend-payers in a non-registered account….. …we like BNS, TD, ENB, FTS, CNR, SLF, BAM, CSU, AEM.
So, if I want to minimize my taxable income in retirement, when does it make sense to borrow to invest in those dividend-paying tax-favoured stocks?
I believe the short answer is “when the after-tax cost of capital is less than the expected after-tax return”. Correct?
If so, why doesn’t anyone with some borrowing capacity borrow to invest in my situation? (Risk-aversion?)
Thank you.
If the oil price keep on go up, will it hurt CNR:CA profit? Now is $145, dropped from the rebound. What is the good price to buy in . Please kindly advise.
