Q: Further to Paul's MISC question; What is the best way to rebalance? A simple calendar approach? If so how often? At one extreme, one could rebalance daily, but incur heavy transaction fees and possibly sell one's winners way too early.

At the other extreme, one could rebalance annually, or some longer period. Transaction fees would be minimised. But this approach might miss cycle tops (and bottoms).

If a calendar approach is not used, then how is discipline maintained?

Q: Hello folks:

1. I know predicting interest rates has become a dangerous activity now a days. Rate hike prediction hasn't materialised but instead we got Poloz's rate cut.

2. Through my Scotia itrade I get IPO offers for preferred shares. Yesterday I got one from BMO Perpetual preferred share 5 % and one from Canadian Utilities 5.25 %

Worth buying? Of course one can only express an interest and one is not guaranteed to get the shares.

There seems to be a shift from Rate reset to Perpetual Preferred shares recently. At least that is my perception. Furthermore the new issues, (at least on Scotia iTrade platform) are sold out within a day! Especially the issues by Big Banks and solid Canadian companies. Any reason why? Does it mean the smart money is hungry for a solid 5 % yield?

Q: What would be a good entry point for RUS? I Have been watching it for a while. Well manage and a good dividend.

Do you think that if it keep falling up to the mid teen. It could become a takeover candidate, especially with the weak CDN!

Q: After the latest quarterly earnings report from Titan Logix, the market moved lower by approximately 25% with news that business is waning and hurt by the slowdown in the Canadian Oil/Gas sector.

Any comments whether it's a buy, sell or hold at this point.

Q: My question has to do with portfolio rebalancing and how that differs from timing the market. I regularly trim my winners (although they are getting harder to find!) so that no one equity gets too large within the context of the portfolio. With the proceeds, I either buy an interesting looking new idea (which usally means also selling a loser to retain portfolio concentration) or to increase a position in a currently owned equity. But I notice that from time to time, when asked about portfolio weightings, you do change the weightings to reflect your latest assessments of the market - for example you recently suggested that it might be best to hold off on material sector companies (I trust I am not misquoting). So is portfolio review an ongoing activity or more of a a structured event which usually is done quartely semi-annually or annually? If structured, how often should one do it and is that when I should sell or trim winners?

Q: I am considering adding an oil producer (WCP) to my portfolio which has 2% invested in PEY, TOU, & VET. My thinking is that if the break-even for most North American producers is $70- 90.00, and even the Saudi's are at $27/bl, then $47.00 is not sustainable. The big question is how long the price stays low.
Would you recommend starting to add WCP and building over the coming months or are there indicators you would want to see before making the investment.

Q: Is there a specific reason why gold stocks are down a lot more than the spot price ? Is it only related to the China purchase being way lower than anticipated ?
