Q: In a straight-up comparison of BMO (Bank of Montreal) versus RY (Royal Bank), for a long-term position (non-registered account), which one would you buy, and why? (I've owned BMO for >25 years, never owned Royal, but because of ongoing portfolio adjustments, I'm in a position where I want to own one of these two banks, for the long-term. Note: I already have long-standing positions in TD Bank and National Bank, in my Canadian portfolio, so another aspect to my question is which one better complements my existing Canadian bank holdings. In my situation, there are no particular tax implications for buying BMO vs RY.)

Q: I have in my portfolio AQN with with -6% down. Im thinking of selling AQN and buy BEP.UN as a better performer. My question is when is better time to buy BEP.UN now or after close of the spin out , and why?.

Q: Why the announcement combination of SOX and BDT resulted on SOX going down by more than half. I hold SOX in a registered account at a huge loss. Do you think it is time just to bail out or wait for the transaction to take place? What is the incentive to the board of directors to agree on a transaction that results in such a drastic devaluation of stock price?

Q: re: T1135 Foreign Income Verification Form

Hi 5i,
I understand that you are not tax experts but, I would appreciate your thoughts.
I am a Canadian citizen and I have ample cash in my NonReg account such that I can allocate more than $100K to US listed securities on a US exchange. In general, I am interested in purchasing US listed ETF's since they are much cheaper and there are many choices. Are there any drawbacks to exceeding the $100K threshold other than having to file the T1135 form?

Q: This is a follow up question regarding Boston Pizza, as I too bought shares in bpf.un many years ago for income, and at a much much higher Avg cost than where it is today. As the dividend has been suspended, and the business has not been growing as highlighted in your most recent report on the company, I am considering selling and taking my loss. My only question is if there might be a buyout of this company by a stronger competitor? Cara for example? Or does Jim Treliving have the resources to take the company private?

Q: I have done well on Decartes, thanks to you! I am thinking of selling some of it and buying TD as it has been down. Do you think this is a good trade, I am thinking technology sector may cool off and financial may rebound next year. As Decartes is still climbing, do you think it would be better to hold for continued growth. Thank you!
