Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Swiss Water announce their Q results a few days ago and the stock has responded nicely and volume has picked up. Although you lost confidence in the company awhile ago, I did not heed your advice. I kept my holdings as I was always intrigued by their decaffination process and thought it would eventually resonante with the growing health concious consumer and hoped that the long awaited 2nd line would materially increase growth. Can you please
1) analyze their most recent Q
2) comment on their future prospects, expected growth estimates and if they are a buy sell or hold.
3) what is a fair price for the stock
I wanted to keep the stock long enough to see if the second line (which took way too loing in my opinion) refueled their growth and market interest. I need an objective 3rd party to tell me if my faith has been misplaced or soon to be rewarded.

Love your service and balanced advice

Many Thanks
Scott

Q: At what price would Canadian Utilities be a good point to buy the stock for dividend income? If there are better companies in the utilities market, please comment on that. I am looking for a company with good dividend prospects for the next 5 years.

And is CU a good bet for capital growth in the next 5 years? If not, what are better options?

Thank you for your valuable input and have a great day!

Q: I sold 1/2 of my ATD because it got to over 20%. Do you think a good replacement with the recent weakness would be BYD or do you view the risk as significantly higher? Do you think the selling on BYD after its Q release is over done? What would be a good entry point? Is there another stock you would consider a better replacement for ATD?
Thank you.

Q: Hello - would you please explain the merits of journaling Canadian shares that are listed in both the US and Canada. For example, I have RBC. What advantage to I gain by journaling it to the US? Does that impact my Portfolio Analysis to give me more US exposure? At this point, I'm selling Canadian positions and converting the cash proceeds to USD then purchasing (different company) positions in the US. Thanks, al

Q: Very disappointed by your reply yesterday to my question which looks like a plain dismissal, as you didn't utter a word on the second part of the question on industrials, while making it private as to avoid embarrassment.

This is a public question.

Q: Still considering OLY and after reading the report it seems clear what drives earnings as of now, and what can bring them higher or lower quite quickly and that would be, Interest Rates
Olympia noting in the annual report that they are exposed to interest rate risk as the cash portion of the off-balance sheet arrangements ($1.00 billion), from which Olympia Trust earns trust income.

2023 Earnings this year were $21 million... according to the Annual report (pg 26) if rates change +/-1% it is estimated that Olympia’s after-tax earnings for the year increase/decrease $7.69 million (noting prime rate at 7.2%)

So rates drop to 6.2 % and earnings drop over 33%?! Is this not essentially a bet on rates at this point or am I missing something?

I guess reading annual reports could pay off (as knowing this when rates were on the rise with no slowdown coming would have been beneficial)

Thanks for your Input

Q: Am interested in a couple of Cons.Disc. Stocks - SBUX and NKE . Both global brands and lagging in part , I believe , due to China concerns . From previous questions , my impression is that you would be OK with either if one is prepared to be patient as things work out.
Would that be a fair assessment and which would you choose between the two ?

Q: “Does every disposition of shares during a year have to be reported on your tax return even if you still hold a position in the stock at the end of year-end?”

This is a question asked by Paul on March 21. You answered that all dispositions must be reported. Wouldn’t donations of stocks to registered charities be an exception. The disposition is noted. But, one is exempt from paying capital gains tax on those securities.
Thanks
