Q: In your opinion how will these short squeeze situations affect the markets going forward? Will we never see such a large percentage of the float being shorted again? Surely any company that experiences a 100% float will be the next target of a reddit campaign.

It could also be looked at from the other side. Any company with a high percentage of shares sold short could experience buyers trying to preemptively predict reddit forums from doing it first. Has this situation permanently changed short selling?

Q: Hi 5i,

You have mentioned that the US retail investors are speculating BB's operating system for autos may become the industry.
What exactly is the social media stock boards Redditt and RobinHood do you mentioned? How can they able to push up or down the stock price? Just like a large group of gamblers doing mass trading without any fundamental analysis? Would you please kindly advise and explain in detail? Thanks a lot.

Q: Hi folks, last reporting for Vivo was Q3/20 (end Sep 2020). Vivo held 5.3M shares in Skylight shg/v at .03sh, now valued app $1.50sh/share. Also held investment in Meta/v, that got bought out & converted into 4.5M shares of Hiti/c at .19, now valued app .70/share. Also held Friendly Stranger & since taken out & converted to Fire & Flower shares Faf/t. Question is..any way of finding out if Vivo still holds or sold, all or some of the three companies shares, etc???? Called the company but wouldn't confirm anything, and even upcoming Q4 results will only cover to end of Dec 2020. Is there any site/program, etc to be able to find out holdings/investments/dispositions that a company like Vivo has made...or as an investor, do you have to wait and only find out in Q reports. vivo has been a dog, but if they do in fact still hold investments in High Tide & Skylight...would help the bottom line as both stocks have been big winners in January 2021. Sorry for the convoluded Q, but as shareholder of Vivo...I thought I would/should be able to find out the investments of Vivo. Thanks for the help & info, jb Piedmont QC

Q: This one is for Peter, since I understand hedge funds were once your bailiwick?

I know little-to-nothing about hedge funds and how they operate, so watching these huge swings happening on the markets lately and people covering shorts (whatever that means) ... I'm very curiously concerned about the overall impact this will have on the markets? Does the common sense investor bail out of Nasdaq stocks, for instance, for the moment, until everything settles down? There is no rhyme or reason to what is happening with many stocks and it would be horrible to be caught in the crossfire just for being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

I would appreciate Peter's perspective re: how to handle the US part of the portfolio at the moment.

Thanks, as always, for your great advice!

Q:

Peter,

My questions revolves around the sites Morningstar and TMX money. I look at these types of sites who provide loads of data and am wondering about the MO. Are these types of sites set up to give you "teaser" information and then get you to subscribe or do they collect their revenue from advertisers ?

Thank you

Paul

Q: One of the biggest BB shareholders is FFH, if I am not mistaken.
Do you know if FFH is holding on to its shares or dumping them into this frenzy?
How would one know? I think this would be material information to know how.

Q: Hello 5i team, I need to assemble a large amount of U.S. dollars (~$25,000 for an investment near and dear to your hearts). I have used Norbert's Gambit for smaller conversions in the past, which works fine except that I'm sometimes tempted to 'play trader' and to time my transactions to pick up some extra dollars. But for this large transaction, I don't want to mess around. I know I can do the gambit with any interlisted stock, but I would prefer to reduce or eliminate the risk of a price move against me. Can you recommend a good investment vehicle for this purpose? Also, can the buy and sell be done the same day, or do brokers require the first buy trade to settle before I can do the sell on the US side? Thank you!

Q: When mutual funds and ETF'S show there annual returns are they net of all fees? So if a mutual fund has a higher MER but out performs a lower fee ETF it would be obviously better to go with the Mutual fund if history shows better returns even if it's only say 0.5 %. Not guaranting future returns of course. Is this why you like recommending Mawer funds!

Q: Quarterly reports for public companies are presented on a quarterly basis to the public as per financial regulations. The report is posted on a specific date that the public is notified weeks in advance. Before the report is presented to the public who sees the report and when? Board of Directors, senior management team... etc.

Q: Hi, guys!
I am managing an income portfolio for a relative, who also has some "paper" shares of Blackberry (BB). She would like to know how to either sell them or how to move them into her trading account at RBC Direct Investing. Since I never having been involved in such, can you tell me what would be the procedure?
Thanks!

Q: Are there any blogs, magazines, papers, etc that you recommend for an investor to keep up to date or get new ideas? I have found than many of the sites/periodicals that I used to read/watch have become very politicized and are pushing either a far left or far right agenda. (I would love to go a full day without someone talking about Trump). I still like to check on what stocks Mawer and PHN are holding in their funds, but beyond that I feel so many people are just pushing agendas.
