Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Sometimes in your answeres you reply along the lines "we would be OK buying this". I'm not sure how to interpret OK. Is it a recommendation like a statement of support. Or is OK meaning not bad but not good.

Thanks John

Q: A little while ago I asked 5i what the current yield was for UMAX and HMAX as I wanted to target the yield for an entry point . Could 5i give me the formula to use so I can do this on my own ? Use HMAX as an example to illustrate using the formula ..... Thanks Garth

Q: Hi 5i, for sector alignment, I need to sell one of KEL or PHX.
I am up 45% on KEL, and up 33% on PHX. No tax issues as they are both in TFSA.
Which would you recommend to keep for a 3-5 year hold.
Thanks for your advice.

Q: Re your response to Ross Nov 9 on earnings I am curious to know how this Co acquired such a heavy debt load; It almost looks as though the company was under capitalized at issue. The accompanying profile refers to the Co acquiring practices but this could be outright purchase or simply a stake. What would be a normal debt load for this situation and what does acquiring imply? Could you also comment on the probability of the federal government announcing a supported dental plan, a possible date for such and the impact on the company if this occurs. What looked to be a desirable investment has sagged badly.

Q: I have held NPI for sometime and am down almost 8%. I know you're not a big fan of the stock currently and prefer BEP, H or FTS. That said, 9 of 9 analysts are rating NPI as a Strong Buy. None of the others are rated as highly. What are you seeing that they do not?

Q: I have incorporated these ETF’s into my RRIF with the goal of deferring taking capital from my principal ( mandatory and rising % withdrawal requirements ). They now represent 33% of total portfolio. My TFSA and cash accounts equal my
RRIF and are more growth oriented. The ETF’s give me a high yield, diversified portfolio of solid large cap, primarily low growth companies in Canada and the US. So I ask myself “ Why don’t I have my RRIF be 100% of these 5 ETF’s ? What say you ?

Thanks Derek.

Q: Industrials 12% target allocation - what allocation do you advise? I have Full positions in WSP VRT and Partial Positions in ATS TFII HEI and AXON. Based on your advice, I would also like to have positions in URI HON TRI TIH HPS.A. Need to sort out what to own as Full and partial positions. Please rank for full and partial positions with entry prices for those not owned and what to drop from this list. I have a bias for serial acquierers along the lines of CSU.

Q: Given the recent softening in the US energy market what are your thoughts on acquiring some producers with attractive dividend yields? For example, DVN or CTRA. Also, what are your thoughts on oil-heavy vs gas-oriented producers? Thanks.

Q: It seems like dividend payers are starting to respond to the possibility that interest rates may have come close to their peaks. Some Canadian and dividend payers are down substantially. I'm looking to invest in some of these companies that I hope I can look back a year from now and say -- that was a smart investment! Please list ten strong companies that you think are great buys today for income and capital appreciation.
