Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: In my balanced portfolio, I think I am underweight in the following sectors: Energy 2% [ENB], Healthcare 3% [GUD], Telecom 7% [T, VOX], and perhaps overweight in Materials 10% [AEM,CCL.B, SJ, MX] and Tech 18% [CSU, DSG, ENGH, SHOP, PHO]. What is your opinion, and what should I buy or sell to rectify this? I have cash available. Many thanks, as always.

Q: Just a comment about the site www.dividendhistory.org, members should probably be reminded that any 3rd party source providing information about a particular company should be taken with a a grain of salt and verified against other sources (such as the company's website itself). For instance I noticed that the referenced site showed a whopping dividend decrease for Savaria in 2017 and knew that wasn't right so when I checked further I note that although they supposedly adjust for splits, their system apparently didn't handled the switch to monthly versus quarterly dividends very well!

Q: Should I just rut all my money in these Bank ETFs and hibernate for the rest of the year. 3 more rate hikes by the FED should be good for US banks and also Canadian Banks as spreads widen ? Any others you like ? RAK

Q: Using BCE as an example, can you explain how to use technical analysis, moving averages and bottoms to add/start a position?
I am retired and want to add to my BCE position, but would like to at least give myself an educated guess on when to buy.

Q: Dividend history web site: On Jan. 30, Peter asked: "I'm interested in reviewing the dividend history of Canadian pipelines, utilities, reits and other income stocks over the long run, namely through recessions and interest rate movements (the tagged companies are representative). I'm trying to determine if the dividends remain fairly stable or tend to fall under these circumstances....."
This site is quite reliable, current and accurate: www.dividendhistory.org

Q: I was wondering whether your service has anyone that uses technical analysis or whether you only go by fundamental analysis? It seems that technical analysis would have shown a definite red flag with ECN on the chart months back when the stock had a very big reversal candle in early November. Perhaps you could consider bringing on someone with TA expertise to help with stock selection and opinions.
