Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Torstar (ts.b) was recommended by a BNN guest at around $6.00 and again this week at around $1.50 and my screen shows a 16% dividend. Is that actually the dividend and do you see growth for this company as they transition from advertising to digital? I look at newspapers as a very tough business to stay competitive but if this one survives, it could be a great investment. Would you buy it and do you think the dividend will be cut (dramatically)?
Thanks.

Q: I bought this quite recently as its valuation seemed decent and the stock seemed to be firmly in recovery mode. Do your resources indicated why it dropped 14% today? This is not a small cap stock...

Q: Hello Peter,
I own some fortis and canadian utilities. I was thinking of selling both to put the proceeds towards hydro one for long term hold. Hydro one has not been around for long time so was wondering if you thought it might be a good idea. thanks very much.

Q: Hi Peter, I know the question I am asking is very hard to predict/answer. Although I would appreciate if you give it a shot.

I currently have your growth portfolio and some stocks from your balance portfolio on a margin account. I have some US growth stocks too(like AGN, CERN, BIDU). I have enough cushion but I do have 30% of my portfolio on margin. I would appreciate if you just do not advice me not to use margin(like other financial professionals).

My question is do you think considering all current turmoil and risks looming(US election, oil price, global recession), should I be better off taking some profit off the table? I was reading Prem Watsa's 2016 letter and he was very negative things to say regarding current valuation. Basically what do you think Canadian/US market would be at year end? Do you think there might be some opportunity(like last August or October or like Feb 2016)? I would really appreciate your insight. What would you do in this situation if you are in my shoes?

Q: Hi Peter, I bought this company in 2015 at 1.50-ish. It is now sitting at 67 cents. I am 62% down on it. I know it is a smaller gas company and I mistimed the buy and my oil/natural gas call was wrong. I bought it at that time seeing its valuation is very cheap. I don't need the capital now and can hold onto it for 5 years. I could not find much info on the company. Do you have some more information on your Bloomberg about this company? What is your analysis on YGR?

Q: What's up with the naming convention for preferred shares? For example, Artis REIT Series C Preferred Shares trade as AX.PR.U. I've noticed this with other prefs and find them hard to locate.
