Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Looking at the sell offs/drops on both sides of the border the last week, can you offer any advice? I have a long term outlook, and am ok with some risk. Do you see any stocks (on either side) the present a good buy at current levels that are likely to make a good rebound?

Thanks

Q: Hi Team,

What are some "safer" stock picks in the current market conditions?
I would expect AI.TO (Atrium Mortgage Investment Corp) to benefit from the rising rate environment. As interest rates rise, the credit worthiness of the Big Banks potential customers will be more scrutinized and therefore applicants such as building developers would have to look elsewhere for financing such as Atrium. These applicants (although rejected by Big Banks) would have better credit worthiness than Atriums current customer base and over time I would expect that the average credit worthiness of Atriums loan base to increase (given that the life of majority of the loans are1-2 years, a quick shift in borrowers is not unlikely). Historically, Atrium had a loan loss provision of less than 1.2% and normally has 75% loan to value cap. Please can I have your thoughts?

Q: Hello. The financial post used to have a site which listed exchange traded convertible bonds. It used to show bond price, conversion rates, premium %, common share price etc. But it is no longer available.
Is there any service, site or brokerage, that provides this info? Free would ideal, but but I'm willing to pay a reasonable fee to obtain this info.
Thanks for your help.

Q: With the recent sell off, have any of the above stocks (contained in either the Income or Balanced Portfolios) reached the stage where you would call them "table-pounding buys"? In other words, has the market overreacted and the pendulum has swung too far?

Obviously, there is always the chance of a continued downdraft, but at some point you just step in top up your holdings.

The Income Portfolio is sitting on 10% cash...any thought to deploying some of it soon? Thanks...Steve

Q: Hello 5i
Do you think that dividend payers will ever come back into fashion. I know they were at elevated levels with ultra low interest rates but has the market over reacted to these stocks? Am I safe with a 10 year time line to stick with stocks like ala, enb, bce, dol and bns for example?
Thanks.

Q: There appears to be a significant sell-off over the past week of various split share funds (DFN, DGS, FFN, FTN, DF). Some are even trading at close to NAV.

Any idea what's going on?

Many of the funds are well above the NAV threshold and continue to pay the dividends so that doesn't appear to be the cause.

Q: It's getting ugly out there. Any general comments about what to do (esp. if you like the gains you've had and don't want to see them just relentlessly evaporate?). I realize I've answered my own question but am still interested in any comments that come to your mind.

Q: I bought DOO and now down almost 20%. Are these guys run by the same Bombardier family that runs BBD? Knowing how you guys feel about Bombardier I would be surprised you'd recommend a company run by Bombardier. Can you please advise who they are run by. And also, I would like your opinion on if it is time to dump it, hold it or add to it? Thanks
