Investment Q&A

Q: A couple of days ago, Greenspace Brands had a NR which appears to indicate that they are making serious in roads into the retail space in Canada with a multitude of products. Although a small company at this point and despite the competitive nature of the business, their rapid progress is impressive and management seem to be very switched on. In addition, the warrants also look like a serious bargain given that they don't expire for 2 years.

In light of these developments, is it possible that you may begin to analyze JTR as a potential candidate for your growth fund.

Keep up the great work.

Q: This may be an off the wall question but it relates to Tesla's quest to build electric stations throughout the world to energize electric cars and the consequential loss of market share of ATD/B in it's gas station units should Tesla succeed.
The question is: do you feel that an investment in both companies simultaneously would be a better bet than opting for one or the other?

JAMES TFSA: CRH 26%, ECN 6.52%, EFC 11.39%, GUD 10%, PHO 12%, PBH 10.76%, SIS 16.61%, TOY 5%

LORETTA TFSA: GSY 14.67% KXS 15.41%, MTY 15.82%, SIS 18.91%, SHOP 15.82%, WCP 13.77%, TOY 5.58%

Q: Hello,
This is a question more about portfolio management than a specific stock. I need to make a fairly large purchase soon and I have been debating about taking the money out of my TFSA, which thanks to 5I has done amazingly well, ( i would immediately buy the stocks sold in the TFSA in my RIF, thus not losing out on future gains). Better start another sentence :).

Or, use the opportunity to prune my portfolio. I do have too many stocks and would be glad of an opportunity for pruning. But, the ones I would prune have a capital gain of at least seventy per cent. Because I have a number of smaller positions in many cases this comes to only ten or fifteen thousand dollars per stock.

Or, should I just let them ride and live with the chaos?

thanks for any help

Q: I have taken small positions in TV and MX as I like the demand/supply metrics for their products as well as latest company news, being the arrangement with Glencore for TV and the activist shareholder for MX.
I am holding them for a trade over the next 12 months.
What tools would you use ( commodity price, technical analysis, price momentum, target price etc.) to determine when to sell?
Thanks
Derek

Q: I am down on both companies 25% each and would like to switch to MX. Which one should I sell or trim both? My objective is growth.

Q: From your experience did you find that, in an upward market, inflow of money into mutual funds increases and therefore accelerates the upward momentum and the opposite is true as well? Today with all these ETFS can this occur with ETFS as well? Is the popularity of ETFS (funds flowing in and out) is adding to the volatility of the market. Would you see a panic scenario causing a major collapse?

Thanks.

Q: I Have BEP.UN, and BPY.UN which have gone sideways for me in the last year, I also have BIP.UN which has done very well.
I am thinking of selling BEP and BPY and buying BAM.A with proceeds. Is this a good switch.
Thank You

Q: Good morning Peter and Team,

My wife holds DH in her TFSA and her average purchase price was $28.08 per share (not ideal timing). It's only 0.38% of our overall portfolio. In the Technology sector, across all accounts, we own CSU (4.07%), ENGH (1.02%), KXS (0.68%), and OTEX (1.82%). What stock(s) in the same sector would you recommend to replace DH? I realize that our larger positions in CSU and OTEX probably eliminate further purchases, but would you say that adding to ENGH and KXS would be advisable? Or are there other Tech sector stocks we should consider? (We haven't yet decided to wait until DH is taken over and tender our shares, or to sell now if there are compelling reasons.)

Thanks as always for the valued advice.

Q: I am a 30yr old long term investor with a Canadian portfolio leaning towards growth. Consumer (cyclical and non cyclical) account for approx 10% and would like to increase this to approx 20%. I currently hold ATD(4%), MTY (4.5%), TOY (1.7%), and would like to selectively add over the next few months to achieve my target of 20%. How would you suggest i achieve this? Would you add to current names? Add a position or half position off my watch list (ZZZ,DRT,SHOP)? Or do you have any other names that you feel would fit in better? Since i plan on having these holdings long term i would also appreciate your opinion on entry point or if you think i should avg in once you have answered the questions above. I appreciate your service and feel free to deduct as many credits as necessary.
