Q: This is a general comment in response to D's question asked on August 14, regarding BNS. I would agree with 5i that it's the valuation; yield and growth + the price we pay for a stock creates future value.
For example, owners of quality individual shares obtain stock splits every decade or so. 200 shares of BNS bought in 1990 for $4,800, for instance, with splits, are now 800 shares. When you multiply 800 shares by the price of $80 it's $64,000. And, dividends now provide more than half the purchase price ($3.10 times 800 = $2,500) Stocks get safer as time goes by. BNS now has a $60,000 buffer before we lose capital; however you have to wait a couple of decades to get it.
D should be a holder of BNS and quality companies that pay a dividend. Yield + Growth + the price paid for a stock, will create value.

Q: Hi 5i team,

I currently hold a well-balanced portfolio and I am contemplating selling 50% of my position in GSY to purchase ECN. I am willing to take on some risk for potential reward, but I am unsure if maintaining GSY would be more appropriate for my investment space.

Best,
Matt

Q: Hi Team,
Can you comment on GSY earnings and the company in general? To me they appear to be record with great growth. Their model seems to be almost flawless with almost a limitless runway ahead in Canada with very little competition in their market. They now appear to also be benefiting from the new interest rate law as smaller competition is getting wiped out and they gain market share. I look at their market cap of only 2B...then I look at the revenue coming in. The valuation don't make sense to me. The company seems so cheaply valued by the market in my opinion. They keep executing, the loan book is now climbing at a exponential rate over the last couple years. It seems more and more people are needing their services. Do you think eventually they will take the company private? Or possible some private equity firm comes in and buys them out and keeps the dividend for themselves? With the numbers they are now putting out it appears like the company could buy itself out in only a few years. Am I correct in all this bullish view or what am I missing here? Appreciate the feedback!

Shane.

Q: NVEI I’m down 47% in a non registered account. Do you see a catalyst coming in the next 30 days or would you lock in the capital loss and buy again later? Is there a decent proxy you can recommend if tax loss selling here makes sense?

Thanks as always.

Q: I just rec'd a mgmt. information circular about a potential reverse exchange. They'd like to "issue exchangeable shares during the 12 month period from the date of the meeting, in connection with one or more exchange or similar transaction whereby holders of Brookfield Class A Share will be given the opportunity on a voluntary basis to exchange their Brookfield Class A Shares for newly-issued exchangeable shares on a one-for-one basis." Can you please provide a simpler explanation and how this is in the interest of the shareholder. Thanks!
