Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: SWP: It's been a long time since their last report. I understood they would be reporting last week. Does this seem like a sign that I should sell before the news?
GUD: They have been buying back shares for years. Is there reason to believe they are preparing for privatization? In the past year they bought more than $3M in shares. Insiders bought modestly; no sells.

Q: On GSY & WELL. I am down 30% on both in a registered account. Looking at the tax loss and moving to AT and CSU. I have started to use this as a growth account. Or I could sell and wait 30 days to rebuy. Looking for growth possibility so being a little more aggressive is OK

Q: I have to move $100K into my RSP for corporate tax reasons. I have been waiting for the market to settle. I am in no rush just have to do it before October. I know you can’t time the market but thinking about making the transfer and then slowly buying over the next while as the ups and downs are not as big as they have been over the last many months. Your thoughts on this?

Another option may be purchasing a few ETFs both growth and balanced. I have no ETFs to date and think this may be an option, any suggestions?

Q: Good morning I have a TFSA tax question you might know the answer. If you are fully maxed out with no contribution room could you sell covered calls for stocks you own on the US side and not get a penalty for the premiums collected? I was thinking these would be view like a dividend but am I wrong?

Q: Hi Peter & 5i, The above ADR's trade on US Exchanges among others,
whose dividends are passed on to Canadian investors without the dreadful withholding tax, even in taxable accounts. How would you rate them from good to not so good. Also your input on these and others that you can think of, would be appreciated. As always thanks for the great service. Ivan

Q: I sold my GUD shares and would like to use this cash to add to either LSPD 1.7 % , SIS 3.4% , TIXT 1.1%. Which one would you add first or should I add to all 3? This is for a TFSA account.

Q: I've been self managing my portfolio for 18 months. I'm already retired but still maintain a buy and hold strategy. However I've seen nice profits disappear on some of my holdings and I'm wondering if and when it's wise to take profits. For example, my CVE stock has increased 118% and now represents 5.25% of a portfolio that has about 15% in energy. Is this a good time to sell all or a portion of CVE and invest the dough in another company or continue to hold for the next couple of years and reap the dividends?

Q: My fixed income holdings are comprised of - LYZ801A & MMF559.
I am with a full service advisor - up until a few years ago we bought individual bonds - then on his recommendation switched to these funds. What is your opinion on their performance. What are some alternative better performing mutual funds and ETF options or should a person go back to buying individual bonds? I read an opinion that said with individual bonds (held to term) you get the principal and interest with funds not so much. Your expert opinion would be appreciated as usual.

Thanks

Q: Questions about Disney appear fairly regularly. The answers in the last few months remain fairly positive, but I thought to check in on your current thoughts.

I can't understand the P/E, your company report shows it at 81.9. Can you verify that and offer any suggestion why it is so high?

I wonder about some potential headwinds, including continued Covid (less travel); a recession (less holiday spending); inflation (price hikes for their theme parks + cruises); recent labour / political issues (Florida); being ahead of their sales. And who knows what else?

I am down a fair bit after buying 8 months ago and am getting impatient. I am thinking of selling my position in DIS and moving to TT, one of your long time favourites. If it were you, would you make this move or hang on to DIS. And why, either way.

Thanks much for your excellent service.

Q: Thank you for responding to MP and NEO. Re NEO I see no reference in their most recent reports or other published coverage to a decline in revenues over the next two years so wondered if this came up in the conference call, and if so the cause of the anticipated decline. As to current pricing while the valuation looks modest on present earnings data I do not have and would appreciate your view on the valuation of this security versus others in their sector. Thank you.
