Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Kraken Robotics seems to draw a lot of attention, over past 2 days, specially following Mr Carney's announcement about increased defence spending/submarines.

Do you view the stock's rise to current levels sustainable in near term, with 35% gain within a short span of 10 days, with no company specific news ? ( With volume 4X average )

Is the stock expensive now on Price/PE basis, considering its unique technological moat and expected growth over coming years ?

Would you recommend, we add to a 1% initial position ?

Thank You

Q: I have been trimming a few positions in my TFSA as they've gone up quite high and now I have $40,000 USD and $4000 cad. I've been waiting to buy certain stocks on the dip and will DCA some of these funds into market but I was thinking I should put it in some type of interest receiving liquid option in the meantime. What you you recommend? I was thinking Cash.to for canadian dollars? SGOV for USD? I believe Sgov would trigger that 15% dividend withholding tax in the tfsa but it's better than swapping to cad and back to usd cuz my instituation charges i think 1.5% each time. Are there any other options you would recommend? for liquidity I can sell and have access same/ next day? thnks!

Q: If an investor books a large capital gain (and has no losses to offset it), how should it be handled from a tax perspective? Is it OK to wait untill filing to pay the tax on it? Or does the CRA want its cut right away? Thanks.

Q: I have owned MAW120 for almost 10 years, and upon looking at its recent performance, I can't find any reason to continue owning this fund. Can you?

As per Mawer's web site (https://www.mawer.com/funds/performance) it shows results as of June 30, 2025 versus its benchmark:

MAW120 1yr: -0.9%; 3 yr: 9.8%; 5 yr 7.7%
Benchmark: 1 yr: 15.8%; 3 yr: 19.6%; 5 yr 13.7%

For the one year period ending June 30th it lost money! It's benchmark earned 15.8%. It has > 50% invested in the US market. I don't see how they could lose money over that time period. Can you explain how it could lose money when markets in US, Canda and Europe over that period were generally good. Even their International Equity fund made 23.3% over the same 1 year time period.

I will be "firing" them. I have sold 1/2 today, and will sell the other 1/2 next week. I would like to invest in the benchmark for this fund, or something as equivalent as possible. Can you suggest 3 ETFs for me to buy for global equity exposure that have significantly better performance than MAW120.

Thanks,
Paul

Q: I am considering holding a crypto currency ETF in my TFSA, approximately 5% of current TFSA total, with a 10+ year horizon. My goal is good long term return tax free.
Would you agree with this strategy>
Would you choose Bitcoin or Etheureum?
Would you choose an ETF or MSTR or BMNR? Why?
If an ETF, which Canadian ETFs would you investigate?
Thank you for your ongoing great service.

Q: Hello 5i,

There is a lot of noise about Stablecoins, gold, US debt reduction and opportunities in crypto coins to take advantage of servicing transactions. IF Stablecoins are rolled out by the US gov't, how will this affect GLXY?

Do you have Crypto suggestions if Stablecoins are backed by the US gov't? Most of this is above our heads but Trump knows how to go bankrupt and make a fortune.

Thank you
