Q: Hi 5i,
How economically sensitive are CHE.UN's business streams? I know they don't appear to have done a great job running the business. There doesn't appear to have been material growth and there hasn't been any dividend growth for a long time. The dividend now looks like it should probably be halved and that cash saving repurposed, probably to debt reduction. But what I'm more interested in is whether you think that a recession would be likely to put their enterprise at substantial risk. Or whether you would not expect their arc through an economic downturn to put them in significant danger of failing. Thanks.

Q: REIT Strategy

REITS have had a good run recently, I recently purchased IIP and CAR.UN. Is there anything that I need to watch for in terms of what could possibly turn things negative? Outside of rising interest rates, what else could affect the REIT Sector. I have heard that new builds will not have rent control in Ontario, and there may be more competitive threats in the near future.

Can you add some insight as to how bad the results were? It had quite a run up into earnings and investors obviously hated the results. What are the main issues that investors reacted to?

Q: This is not a question but a comment on your Portfolio Tracking and Analysis.
For individuals who do not have the time , investment knowledge, experience and time I would highly recommend it.
Going to a financial planner who cost a lot more without the specific investment recommendations.
I know that you are not in the business of giving investment advice but I have a couple of suggestions on this and other items. Not a criticism.
1. Provide a link to latest news releases on pertinent securities.
2. Provide link tosecurity upgrades and downgrades by reputable analysts.
3. When client is providing info on holdings, put in date and price of purchase, this should include commissions and/fees.
The important point being that this will give a true yield and whether these is a capital loss or gain, realized or unrealized. The client will be able to see how his/her portfolio is performing.
This could show up either on a daily , yearly or to date.
Thank you for your service. I find it valuable as part of my overall research into managing by portfolio.

Q: Hi gang, If my portfolio is set up 50/50 with 50% in equities and 25% in bonds and 25% in cash, and if I take the 25% cash and invest in a inverse mutual fund or short the index would my split go to 25/75? Looking at ways to ease the pain during the next bear which we can start to see in the rearview mirror, whether its this year or next. Just don't like giving money back.

Q: Are the fees for the Portfolio Analytics membership tax deductable?
Not a question, but sharing information. You mentioned fees could be claimed as Carrying Charges. Previously, someone mentioned claiming the fees as Investment Counsel. So far, this has been successful for me. I figure, instead of paying my previous (useless) Advisor about $10K/year, I now receive my advice from 5iResearch.

Q: I currently own Shopify in a non-registered account, with significant gains. Thank you for this recommendation. Do you think it is going to continue with its gains and if so, would it make sense to move it to my TFSA? I will eventually have to take the tax hit on the gains, regardless. I have room in my TFSA to buy it back with the gains that I have made. Thanks

Q: Enghouse wants to buy esp for $1.57 a share. Today the stock price of esp goes to $1.58. Can you explain why please? Thanks.

Q: Hello 5i,
Great job on the P.A.!! I found it extremely quick and easy to enter my data and will go through the resulting report soon.
One question I have, however, is: can I (or how do I) add our investment in our daughter-in-law's company? It is a private company and it represents slightly over 3% of our total PF. The easiest would be to add the cash value, but then I wouldn't want it categorized as Cash. One of your previous answers alluded to being able to add holdings that fall outside the box, but there were no specifics.
Also, I can't remember if you have a FAQ on the P.A. page or not, but it if not, it might help a bit.
Again, congratulations on a great job!!! Everyone at 5i should feel very proud indeed!!

Q: I have a few questions about the new Portfolio Analytics service.

1. How does the Portfolio Analytics service differ from the Portfolio Review service that was offered in the past few years?

2. I don't see the Portfolio Review service anymore on your web site. Has it been cancelled?

3. A lot of personal financial information about me would be stored somewhere on your servers. How is this data protected? What is the privacy policy?

4. Has 5i Research ever been hacked?

5. Morningstar has an "Instant X-Ray" tool, which is used by Sunlife where my DCPP is held. Is your tool similar to this X-ray tool, where I can x-ray my portfolio at ANY time myself to get asset class, sector allocation, country weightings, stock style, fixed income style, etc. It's not clear to me that I will be able to do this myself at any time I want, or will I need you to "x-ray" my portfolio for me?

6. Information changes all the time with DRIPs, buy and sell transactions, etc. It would be up to me to keep the information up to date in this system. Every time I do that would I get a new report automatically pointing out over or under allocations, suggestions for improvements etc.? I guess the question is how many times in a year can I get a "second opinion" from this service?

Q: Is there any advantage or disadvantage if I buy any of above stocks to my registered accounts (TFSA,RRIF) on Canadian versus US stock exchange.
What is the better choice and why?
