Q: I am sitting on a 31% loss in Photon Control in my Margin Account. I am considering harvesting the tax loss and re-purchasing in my TFSA after 30 days. Does this seem a reasonable strategy especially since PHO will likely take some time to turn around in this market? Alternately, if I don't sell the shares but move them to my TFSA will that trigger a tax loss? This only seems fair since if I had an unrealized capital gain I would have a deemed disposition and a tax liability.
Q: Evrim Resources (EVM) dropped about 75% today on the latest drilling results from its 100% owned Cuale project in Mexico. However this company has several other projects which are well financed through joint ventures with other gold companies. I am just wondering if this stock has been oversold since there should be substantial value in the other projects even though they are joint ventured. Could you please comment on the accuracy of my take on this as well as any further information you could provide including the cash position, overall financial health, insider ownership/recent buying or selling, and quality/experience of management. Thanks as always for your great service.
Q: Hi 5i team - I have heard recently that the demand for nickel will increase as the production of batteries increases. Could you please give me your opinion on the accuracy of this statement and also your view on the supply of nickel. Is it really dwindling as the author of this statement claims. Are there other uses for nickel that could have an effect on the market. Also would you be able to provide the names of a few companies involved with nickel that you think are well managed with decent fundamentals. Perhaps one major producer, one smaller mid-tier producer and one or two whose main focus is exploration. Thank you.
Q: I have held MFT for under a year, purchased for fixed income outside of a bond fund. Currently down a bit over 1% not counting distributions, which is obviously pretty good in todays' market, but the drop does have me questioning where it might be going. What would you expect the fund price to do in the each of the following situations:
1) rates continue to go up, even if at a slower rate
2) rates stabilize
3) rates go down
Also, how would the distribution be affected in each scenario above and what is the approximate lag time?
Because of the mix of products in the fund, do you think it will act more as a bond fund or an equity fund to market gyrations?
Q: What's happening to RAY.A,It has declined to $7.13,close to a 1yr low. $9.10 p/p,down some 22% to a 1.5% position. Sell,hold or add.Thanks for u usual great services & views
Q: What to do with cpd and Ecn.pr.a .
I’ve held reset prefs before, saw it through through the downturn in interest rates and the upturn again, did well, because I had a long term objective.
I now no longer have this luxury. However I feel some comfort with the minimum rate reset preferred. Should I. I appreciate your unbiased recommendation on both securities.
Thank you.
P.s. will be asking for a complete portfolio evaluation in the new year. Paid of course.
Q: I'm 75 and sort of religiously line-up my rrsp based on your income model portfolio, granted i dont expect always 2017 performance and i'm ready to surf the wave but in few case a Tsunami hit few holdings at this point i wonder if GS and FSZ will ever recover or end up like KWH . Mandatory disbursement (wich you are not responsible)and losses could seriously jeopardize my capacity to keep the divi/income in line.
Thank You
Daniel
In an answer to Ulrike on October 2nd, in which he asked: "Which one company would you buy today? Hydro One or Fortis? Or none? And why?", you answered "Fortis has raised its dividend every year for close to 50 years, and we would have more confidence in it. H is OK, but has a lot of political interference still, with a new board as well, and a large acquisition that has yet to close."
It's your last comment that I'm wondering about. Washington state regulators have blocked the sale of Avista to Hydro One, citing "political interference". Does this setback for Hydro One affect your opinion of H going forward?
Q: Hello
5 I has decided to remove Crius from the income portfolio. I will
follow and sell as I am at a current loss of 50%. What stock would you recommend buying with the balance of the money.
Thanks Maurice
Q: is high interest saving account and is safest to keep cash comparing with bank MMF.
CBO, CPP, XBB all have lost money during the last few years why one should keep the cash in these fund
I appreciate your comment Thank you.ebrahim
Q: Could you compare the CIBC Global tech mutual fund to the tech ETF QQQ
It looks like the former is performing better, and perhaps more diversified?
Thanks Peter.
Q: I'm one of those investors that has trouble selling things at a loss. I'll get over it some time...maybe? However, with Crius you answered a question yesterday that even with a 50% cut in the dividend it's still at 8% +/-. Can you comment further. I'd be happy with an 8% dividend and would be prepared for a long term hold until the company 'comes around' with their divesting of the solar side. What am I not seeing?
Thanks...Graham
