Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I have about 10K of NFI and I'm down about 20% on it (paid close to 12K). Thinking on selling half of my NFI (5K) and using proceeds to buy 5K of Linamar. To spread the risk and also hoping to leverage the potential upside in LNR. NFI pay a 5% dividend though which is attractive (I don't need the dividends yet but at least I get paid to wait). Your thoughts on this ? Stick with NFI or split it between NFI and LNR (I guess which has the better potential for capital appreciation ?).

BTW - Love the new portfolio tools...keep up the good work.

Q: LNR has started acting better. Aside from portfolio weighting considerations, what are the main concerns here? I see a stock that is trading under book value and could move significantly whenever the sector becomes more compelling. Given a long time horizon do you think adding is warranted? Thank-you as always.

Q: Good Morning and Happy New Year: I have funds to add to, or start new position in, one of the above companies (I already own a couple of them). If all other factors are not considered, which of these would you recommend with a comment as to why. Also, how would you rate the four mentioned. Thanks, Don

Q: I have capital gains in which I would like now to sell one stock in which I have a loss and can use against my capital gain. Of the stocks listed, LNR, MX, NFI, PBH, TOY would you sell? I do have the intention to buy after the 30 waiting day period.
Thanks

Q: So what do we do with Linamar. Do we hold it or sell? I had assumed with the agreement on trade between USA and Canada that the stock would be a good company to own. Not so it seems. Any idea why? Is it a concern that we are nearing the end of the automobile cycle and earnings will start to trend down? There is a thought that we are in the last inning for companies such as Magna and Linamar . Do you concur? Anyway the stock seems to be unloved, not sure why . Perhaps you can shed some light on this. How do you see earnings over the next 2 years?

Q: Today Rose Ambrose ,who is involved in the NAFTA talks, indicated that unless Canada compromises Trump will impose the 25% auto tariffs on September 1, 2018.

So how can Canada negotiate/compromise if our negotiators are not invited to participate in the negotiations between the Mexicans and the Americans.

Since very little time is left between now and September 1, 2018 and since Canada is sidelined, is it fair to assume that Trump’s 25% auto tariffs will be implemented?

What is your opinion?

Q: I have listed a few comapnies that I believe are in the, let's call it "Tariff Penalty Box". My thinking is as follows:
1) They have already been hurt by the threat of tariffs.
2) If the tariffs do not come, they will 'pop'.
3) If the tariffs do come, they will also move up as the clarity of actual tariffs should ease concerns compared to the threat of nebullous, potential tariffs.

Does this seem reasonable to you? And do you agree that these four should all be on this list and are there others you would add to it?

Thank-you very much.
