Q: Doing a little research for additions to my TFSA. Looking at GSY, WELL and XBC. I find it curious that GSY has a market cap for approx. $1.9 billion and trades at $125 per share, while the other two have market caps of approx. $1.4 billion and trade at sub $10. Is this a lesson in the difference between a Company growing organically vs growing through acquisitions and issuing large amounts of stock. I'm not saying that the other 2 aren't good companies, but I find it curious that they have similar market caps, yet their share price is ten times higher. Thoughts?

I have had Chorus in my unregistered account for some time and enjoyed the dividend that it had. Now that there is no dividend and the price has recovered somewhat, I am thinking of selling it and putting it into other monthly dividend payers that I hold. I was thinking splitting up the proceeds ($25,000) into DIV, EIF, NXR, SPB, and DIR.UN. I am looking at income (being retired) and want relatively safe dividends. Chorus had none and who knows where it will be a year from now. Why not put it to work in these monthly payers? Are there any in the group you would not put any of the proceeds into and would it be best just to add $5000 to each or would you put more into one. This is a small portion of my holdings and the above stocks represent between 2%-5% of my holdings.

Q: With the NASDAQ at a 3 week low and technology stocks seemingly being used as a source of cash to fun other sectors, do you think it is a good idea to start researching big technology in the U.S. Names like MSFT, NVDIA and GOOGL? While they may not be in favour for a quarter or two, it seems like they will still have strong earnings momentum for years to come. Your thoughts?

Q: Hi Everyone at 5i!! Peter, I would like to thank you for your article in the National Post this weekend! It gave me quite a bit to think about. I am stepping into retirement next month with a very comfortable nest egg. 60/40 stocks and GICs. Stocks are diversified dividend players and growth. It seems though, that any direction you turn, if the stock market develops one kind of an issue or other, we are getting hit. If inflation goes up( which anyone who does the grocery shopping will tell you, it is happening at a goodly pace), and interest payments do not, there goes the purchasing power of your money. Gold could be a portfolio holding...but how much of the stuff is effective to protect the portfolio ? Dividend players may not offer much protection....well there goes that idea. GICs pay piddly amounts. Bitcoin? How could something that technically is based on nothing have so much value??? Real Estate? Stupidly expensive...So, I have a come to two conclusions: 1) start a small hobby farm in my backyard and grow my own vegetables, should things really go egg shaped. 2) Ask for a 5i article, which outlines specific portfolio protection advice considering the times we are living in. Right now, like you, I am trying to stay optimistic,, though sometimes it is hard, and I am staying the course. Thank you for all you do! Cheers, Tamara

This is a three part question, so take as many credits as you need. I know that when MRVL bought IPHI the deal was 66.00 cash per IPHI share + 2.323 shares of MRVL stock per IPHI stock held - at the time, estimates valued IPHI at around 157.00 per share - is that correct? If yes, then since the announced buyout, shares in both companies have risen. How does this affect the value of the buyout? It appears that due to the increase in share value, the math has improved somewhat - or was the buyout based on a fixed value of either IPHI or MRVL shares at the time of the takeover? The 2nd part of this question is this - if you feel it is best to hold IPHI until the deal is closed, would you continue to hold MRVL shares, buy more or sell them once the takeover is completed? The 3rd part is would you just sell IPHI now, considering they are starting to drop? As always, thanks for your input - much appreciated!
