Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I am a retired, conservative, dividend-income investor. I just sold CGX and need to replace it with something else in the Consumer sector. I currently own AW, NWC, PBH and love dividends.

Can you please give me 3 replacement options in the Consumer Cyclical space as well as 3 options in the Consumer Staples space? If it is possible to filter a dividend over 3%, that would be ideal...if not 3%, then try for > 2%.

Thanks...Steve

Q: I hold both of these companies and need to take some profits and redistribute to other holdings. From previous questions I understand a date for the spin offs has not been announced. I do not want to sell now and lose out on the benefits of the spinoffs.
Would the current share price reflect the value of these spinoffs and then drop a corresponding amount when it hits the effective ex-div date similar to regular dividend payments?
I also plan on rebuying the spin off version of bip.un in my taxable acct (both currently in RRSP) based on my understanding that the full dividend would then be eligible for the dividend tax credit. Is this correct?
Thanks.

Q: After Hours Trading Question: Perhaps you could educate me with respect to After Hours Trading. I have seen many examples where there have been trades after the close that have radically altered the 4pm closing price in one direction or another. However, in many cases where this occurs in the absence of news, it is being done with as little as one share changing hands. What would be someone's motivation in leaving investors with the impression that their shares have exploded or imploded after hours, when this is clearly not the case?

Q: Can you explain the difference between panic selling in an individual stock and panic selling in say the S&P 500 ETF.
Would the fall in price between say Microsoft or Starbucks be about the same as liquid ETF like XSP or VBAL.
According to Michael Burrys article in Bloomberg he has said ETFS will fall like CDOS in the Sub Prime meltdown of 2007 because there is no true price Discovery and also the Market Maker might not be there to support the price in a Panic caused by a huge liquidity bubble he created by Blackrock and Vanguard.
Thanks Gord
