Q: I would like to add some coverage in semi conductors. What are your thoughts on these stocks? Is investing in the ETF a better bet? Any valuation concerns with SMH? Do you have other suggestions that are not overvalued?

Q: Good morning, The year end once again brings us the many different opinions as to what lies ahead in 2021. I have read several analysts giving their overweight and underweight suggestions and am struck by the fact that some are overweight financials and utililies and others are underweight. With so many different opinions, I believe one has to choose who makes sense and once again, I choose you. In terms of sector weightings what does your crystal ball say? Of course it can vary, whether one is income or growth focused but with that caveat in mind, what do you think? Thanks

Q: Hi 5i team,

Currently I own in my TFSA the following stocks: CSU, DSG, KXS, OTEX, PHO, REAL, SIS, WELL, XBC, NVDA,VALE and PDYPF (Thanks to SHOP my TFSA grew considerably)
I would like to keep in TFSA only high growth stocks. After reading some of your answers it seems that CRWD and U are good candidates to add.
Please advise which stocks should I sell or move to my cash account to make room for mentioned stocks.

Becoming a 5i member was the best decision ever, thank you for you guidance and amazing service. Reading the Q&A became my daily morning ritual while drinking my coffee.

Q: Hi, Peter, I have watched CSU for a long time but always hesitant to finally purchase. With the spin-off date set, is it better to buy CSU now than afterwards? Is CSU a good buy at this time for 5 + year hold in a RESP?
It looks like 5 shares of CSU (1.859817814) yields 9 shares of topicus as long as the purchase is made before record date. So 5 shares might be the optimal minimum. Does the purchase have to be completed before Dec 23? Your insight on this is much appreciated!

Q: Good morning Peter and team,
I know you have answered this type of question in the past but I have tried multiple options in the Search by text function without any luck.

Do you have any recommendations for reading material for a young adult new to investing? In particular, I am trying to steer him away from thoughts on getting rich quick by picking stocks he sees marketed by youtubers or "stock gurus" hawking their ideas on the internet.

Q: I bought a small amount of a company named Fortress Technologies that is involved in Bitcoin. When the BTC price was lower in 2019 they sub-leased their mining equipment in an arrangement that sees them retain 90% of the profit on each coin mined while the sub-lease company (WeHash) does the mining. This has become lucrative. According to a recent filing they have 163.2 Bitcoin on account which combined with cash and cash equivalent assets meant $.158 per share in tangible value. This number would now be higher with BTC having run from 17k to 23k and another month of mining. For the 3 months ending September 30, they mined 14.2 BTC worth $297,000 USD today at a cost of $10,438 per coin.

Unlike QBTC or GBTC which trade at premiums to BTC and only buy or sell, FORT is mining and buying bitcoin which seems to offer more upside. I understand that a super small cap company like this is not for everyone and that coin prices are just as likely to fall as rise but my question is whether it could be a way to profit in a disproportionate way from bitcoin as more investors look for bitcoin exposure that can be held in registered accounts? To put it another way, could this double based on people piling in and outperform increases in the coin value itself or am I dreaming?

Q: Hello 5i Team

I have been researching the controlling (or largest holder) of the various REITS on listed on the TSX. However I have difficulty in determining the largest holder in several cases.
Some companies make it very easy (either by listing the information in their annual report) and then some make it difficult.

Are you aware of a website that lists this information or do I have to research the quarterly/annual filings and if not successful, then contacting the investor relations group at the REIT in questions.

Q: This year there have been a lot of companies that have made huge gains, and are now trading at very expensive price to earnings or price to sales numbers, particularly in the tech sector. I have several of these myself, but have resisted lightening up at least partially due to not wanting to realize big capital gains this year. Already have big 2020 capital gains from the BYD conversion at the start of this year, which was a taxable event, and I have held BYD for almost 10 years, so had a large embedded gain. I figure there are probably a lot of investors who are feeling the same way with some of their big winners, and I'm wondering about a run of tax GAIN selling in the first week of January, from people who want to lock in some gains, or lighten up outsized positions, delaying capital gains to 2021. Do you think this is a risk, particularly in some of the tech stocks that have doubled, tripled, or more in a very short period of time, and are there any stocks you think might be particularly vulnerable?
