Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: A friend is several years from retirement and is in this (quite good) finanical situation: a teacher who will get an Ontario Teachers' indexed DB pension, CPP and OAS. Owns a modest home in Toronto with no mortgage. No dependents. No debt. Can supplement income after retirement by continuing to teach at about a 20% course load. These income sources would more than cover her living expenses.
She also has an RSP that is currently managed by a financial advisor and holds mutual funds. Friend is asking if she should leave the advisor due to fees and his very conservative management. The RSP has underperformed the markets for an extended period. He sold her holdings at COVID bottom "to avoid further losses" and has said that "at her age" (about 60) she should stay away from equities and hold money market funds or bonds. Since my friend is not financially sophisticated, but is interested in learning, I am thinking a self-directed RSP holding several ETFs might be an alternative for her. Could you suggest three to five ETFs that would provide more growth potential in the 8 to 10 years before mandatory RIF conversion.

Q: My question is about ETF's with dividends. How many days do I have to own an ETF BEFORE I'm eligible to receive their dividend?

For example, TDIV has an Ex-Dividend Date of 12/13/2024

What date did I need to have bought this by to qualify for that dividend?

Q: A UCLA Anderson forecast just issued a recession watch. Its analysis was called…
“Trump Policies, If Fully Enacted, Promise a Recession.”
Can you provide your analysis of this report. Is this a legitimate forecaster with a decent record?
Thanks

Q: In what order would you purchase these stocks. What is a good entry price. In this volatile time would you purchase now or hold off
Thank you again for your good service and await your answer.

Q: Hi 5i Team - Price per Earnings and forward P/E is often used as a measure of valuation for a stock. Also I am assuming that when someone talks of a company trading at 20 times earnings they are referring to this ratio. However I have never been completely sure about what this means. Does earnings mean EBITA. Could you elaborate on the exact meaning of earnings.

Secondly is this the best measure of a company's success, at least for investment purposes, or is there another metric (or more) that gives a better insight into the valuation of a company.

I've never seen a price per profit ratio so here's the third part of this question. Does something like this exist or is there a similar ratio that would help in evaluating a company's performance.

Thank you.

Q: Hi Peter and Team.

Yesterday, Peter (a member) asked this question: Q: tesla sinking….byd recharges in 5 minutes…? EU and Canada to reduce tariffs on Chinese EV in retaliation ..
? a buy

I don’t know about the EU, but Canada is keeping the 100% tariff on electric vehicles from China.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/article/canada-wont-drop-tariffs-on-chinese-evs-despite-trade-war-with-us-minister/

Thanks for all you do.

Q: Good day, 5i Team,

Do we have any Canadian stocks that might benefit from increased military spending?

Do we have any publicly traded military-oriented start-ups?

Thank you as always!

Q: Planning to hedge the tariff fiasco by investing in gold.
1. Is this a good idea do you think?
2. Would you go with a miner such as AEM or another-suggestions.
3. Are the gold miners going to be subject to tariffs?
4. Would you go with an ETF- and if so some suggestions please?

Thanks
Jeff

Q: Nutrien (NTR:CA) shares have steadily dropped about 43% over the last 3 years, so what is the prognosis going forward?
I'm missing something.
Since the USA apparently buys approximately 85-90% of their potash from Canada and the alternative supply is overseas, isn't this a captive market?
Why doesn't Nutrien (assuming it to be the biggest potash player in Canada) increase the price to build value and increase the share price?

Q: I have held Kinaxis for a few (disappointing) years now. This is a logistics/ risk management software company as I understand it.
If what there were a time to succeed in this environment, it would be this- I mean the only thing more timely might be a German weapons maker in terms of sector demand.
Is there reason to believe that KXS has a useful downstream growth story to justify holding?

Q: These two seem to be in the same "space". I'm not sure if they are competitors. I'm also trying to better understand this crypto market. Both appear to have potential and I understand that they are risky and I assume they both will move with the price of bitcoin.
I would like to have a small position. Do you recomend one over the other or a small position in each. Thanks John
