Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Should I continue holding Harmony Gold Mining or take my profit and run? I know that it has more risk the AEG or GLD, but it has a good trend right now.

Should I let it run, or take some profits? You have said before that Gold is insurance, and now that insurance is paying off. When is the right time to cash in, and should profits be put back into gold?

HMY is currently 4.5% of my overall portfolio, and that and Alacer (1%) are my only two gold holdings.

Q: I currently have no exposure to energy or pipelines. I'm trimming some overweight positions and sectors and I'm considering adding a small position in HWO. While I'm interested in total returns, I favour companies that show a profit, pay a dividend and are inclined to increase the dividend - In short, while I'm not an income investor as yet, I certainly prefer a mix of income and growth. At first blush, HWO seems to fit the bill. Your thoughts? Beyond the energy sector in general, are there other risks that concern you about this company? If so, other options?

Q: I am researching REITs to invest personalllythru non registered account and or TFSA. Which do you think would provide good medium term return (on 3-5 year time horizon)?
A friend also told me about NSI.NV, a small REIT which he believes will increase in value by 20% in the short term. Do you know anything about this company and would you recommend investing a small amount of capital, given the fact any investment would be in Euros and there's probably no hedging against devaluation of the CDN dollar available? Thanks for all your help.

Q: What do you attribute to the head wind, other than the smear by the short sellers, that DH faces since April this year?

DH is my single largest holding and it was cruising along nicely until the recent bumps. I also made the "rookie" mistake of increasing my stake in DH as share price spirals downward. To make a long story short, it went from my biggest winner to my biggest loser in my portfolio in a flash.

My dilemma is - do I add even more (betting this sell down is over done), hold a bit longer (hoping for a turn around by some upcoming catalyst), or sell some or all (to cut my losses and move on.

The real key is the business operation of DH. What's you read on the business of DH?

You insight s much appreciated.
