Q: 2 dogs in my portfolio, down 60% and 20+%. Any hope for these 2, or time to move on?

Q: 5-I,

Love the new website, particularly the ability to mark questions as favourites ! Obviously a lot of thought and work has been put into this.

You advertise as being completely unbiased as you do not allow your staff to own stocks you follow or comment on. I would like to put forth my thoughts on this and invite other 5-I subscribers to as well. As an investor I want as knowledgeable and thorough a person as possible on the guiding end. I do not care what stocks he or she owns. I believe most of the 5-I subscriber base relies on stocks that are traded in sufficient volume to negate any possibility of a pump and dump routine of a staffer. I follow two popular investment writers from the Globe and Mail and if either ever writes about a stock they own, they simply acknowledge their personal ownership. Actually I feel better that they have the confidence to invest in it themselves.
I think this will come into play even more if you decide ( hopefully ) to someday cover American stocks. I really don't want someone advising me about stocks who doesn't invest in any equities at all. You would not attract the best candidate with this approach. 5-I and its client base deserve as good a quality advisor in the future as you currently have now.

Q: When I look at the price charts for ENDP, TEVA, CXR, and VRX, I'm seeing companies that have a problem. Assuming GUD goes in as the white knight, are they buying products, divisions or manufacturing operations. Can you explain how GUD would go about acquiring the assets of these companies with their fat bank account?

Q: Thank you for your help regarding historical valuations of young davidsons mine which was taken over by Alamos gold. Thanks to you we were able to get the stock certificates issued in my mother-in-laws name. Now she wants to sell the certificates and I need to determine the value my father-in-law paid for the original 1000 shares of young Davidson's mine August 24 1984. Can you help?
I love the new web site and please extend my thanks Lana for suggesting using Chrome to fix my issues accessing the site on the iPad.

Q: Hello 5i,
Congratulations for your new website and thank you for your good work.

In my TFSA, I have the following stocks:

Aberdeen Asia-Pacific Inc.
Chesswood Group
Crescent Point Energy
Photon Control (You had recommended this one a few months ago, and I am up 16%. Thank you for the good recommendation.)
Sherritt Intl.

I am down 70% on Crescent Point and 55% for Sherritt.

I have a 10 year plus investing time horizon.

Should I hold onto CPG and S and just be patient?
If not, and you recommend to sell either one or both of them, what stock(s) would you recommend as a replacement?

I am looking for growth and income.
Currently, CPG is around $4,000 and so is S.

Q: I currently hold TCN in my TFSA but am considering a switch to SIS. I understand these are two totally different companies but am looking for a little more torque to the upside with SIS. Your thoughts ?

In any case, why the huge drop on Thursday in the price of the action, and what is your assessment of that company now ? How do you see the future of the stock ? A buy or a sell for now ?

Q: Hi, I am helping my in-laws manage their retirement savings, and I would like to have suggestions for investing the remaining balance in my father-in-law's RRIF (about $7000). The rate of withdrawal is fairly high as he is now 92. I was thinking the best way would be to invest in a balanced, dividend or bond mutual fund, to avoid commissions. This mutual fund, composed of various ETFs, is managed by Larry Berman. It seems to generate a decent and constant dividend, without much volatility. The series D has an MER of about 1.17%. What do you think of this fund? Would you have other suggestions? The overall portfolio is very diversified and of course fairly conservative. Thanks for your service.

Q: Am considering a small position in India. FIH.U is tempting me but I realize it is a much different structure than other ETF's. Could you give me your favorite Indian ETF's with FIH.U ranked among them ? And your opinion of FIH.U ?
