Q: I was recently considering a GIC purchase. Oaken Financial is offering a 5y GIC at 3.6% through either Home Bank or Home Trust. When I look at the GIC selection on RBC Direct Investing (or TD), the 5yr GIC at Home Trust is offered at only 3.1%. Does that mean that the bank pockets 0.5% annually from such a GIC? If so, what is the best way to avoid this loss? Buy from Oaken and then transfer to RBC?

Q: Good Morning,
I have narrowed down my decision to buying either COV or PHO for my $6000 TFSA contribution this year. I don't need the money for years into the future and risk is not an issue. I like both very much but wondering what you think for maximum growth? I think PHO is more cyclical and if we do get into a recession in the next 2-3 years it could take a pretty big hit. However, Covalon being in the medical supplies industry I would think it would hold up pretty well during a recession? What would you buy to maximize growth over the next 10 years plus ?
Thanks

Q: Recently came across this fund - Resolute Growth/ Performance - it was / is being run by Tom Stanley - I believe it is closed to new investors - but according to what I read it has performed incredible. Do you have any background to this story - what did they invest in to get these kind of numbers? Just found it very a interesting story.

Q: I'm looking for a healthcare stock to ride out the next couple of years - where I expect a recession - in relatively low volatility, high dividend stocks. I have no CDN healthcare. Can you give me a list of two stocks or efts you like?

Q: Hi, I need to raise some USD cash and considering selling Berkshire Hathaway shares (Holding 100 shares). Bought recently at USD220, but shares have languished with the market decline and unable to regain much strength. Recent softness in Apple shares (large BRK holding) also has n't helped. Somehow, Mr Buffet's aura seems to be fading a bit, I feel. In the financial sector, I own no US banks but a decent CDN banks holding. Rest of my small US portfolio is all major FAANG names and DIS/V/MA/UTX. Do you see any major catalysts in near term for BRK B shares, besides market turn around/US China trade deal ? Thanks

Q: I have a bunch of shares in a computer share account. If I transfer those shares into another broker, would there be any tax consequences? Any idea how the average buy price should be calculated if I transfered some but not all the shares? If no tax consequences, Would taxes only be generated if transferring to an rrsp or tfsa broker account?

Thanks for the great service.

Q: A good article on Jonathan Goodman (GUD) in today's ROB magazine. Also, full page ad submitted by Fiera Capital Corp alleging increased investor interest in 'alternative investments'.

Q: What comments do you have on both these royalties? Do you favour one over the other? Have they increased their dividend on an annual basis and is their dividend covered? Would you buy either of them here and if not, what would you recommend?

Q: Regarding GS, I read a research report yesterday where they mention that the annual regular dividend of $1.00 appears safe. Wondering if you concur. Also, while one should maybe not buy a stock based upon a potential takeover, I would think this firm would be attractive as, if I am not mistaken, they focus on high net worth clients. Also, in a takeover, the current dividend payment could be applied to debt/interest on the buyout price. Am I thinking correctly here?

Q: May I have your thoughts about Conmed Corporation? They seem to be doing well. Are they profitable with positive cash flow, are they deeply in debt, any insider ownership and do they have a niche which offers some protection from Stryker and other "big boys"? How is their record for beating or at least matching expectations? We already own ISRG for a 3% weighting and PFE having a 3.4% weighting in our healthcare sector.
Thanks,
Jim

Q: I am comfortable having about 10% of my non-registered account in the forest products sector. About 55% of this amount is Norbord and the other 45% is split about evenly among Canfor, Interfor and West Fraser. Norbord pays a good dividend; the others don't. Would you suggest any consolidation or rebalancing here or changes that might improve upside potential? All four are down relative to original purchase so any adjustments here would only trigger tax losses.

Q: Lately my capital investment in ZPR has been decreasing. This forms part of my income investment portfolio. I am thinking on making a switch. Which investments would you recommend for income with a little potential growth as a replacement.

Thank you,

Bob
