Q: I currently hold this mutual fund Class F units. The company want to terminate this fund and merge with the Excel High Income Fund. The vote will take place later this month depending on approval this will happen as the manager recommends that investors vote for the merger. I will be in a loss position. Can you tell me what you think of this proposal and your opinion of this mutual fund.

Q: CAn you please comment on the latest quarterly results? It appears strong but the stock is down.

Q: The market was way down today, but not all sectors. Mining was way up. Oil and gold did very well, too. What puzzles me on days like this is that everywhere I look all the 'experts' are saying to stay the heck away from commodities, that there is no sign of increasing demand from China, that they don't yet see a bottom in oil (Iran has yet to release all its oil onto the market) and gold is unlikely to go anywhere fast. So who is buying all these stocks on these days, and why? There seems a kind of obsession among Canadians for oil and gold in particular, based on all the questions you and BNN get on them. My portfolio is up 15% YTD because I have no gold, oil or mining stocks. Why are people buying them? And is it possible to know why are they all piling in on mining stocks today?

Q: Do you have an opinion on the "structured notes" issued by Canadian Banks ? For example, RBC Principal Protected Global Large Cap Growth Note. It seems that the principal of the notes is protected, but the principal will not be paid back for 6.5 years. Interest return is variable, depending on the underlying securities, but should be higher than standard rates (some say up to 9%). Surely such returns could not be guaranteed ? Can the notes be re-sold prior to term ?

Q: Just an anecdotal comment on day trading: I know a day trader who got his professional training at one of the big 5 banks trading departments. In his mid-forties now, he claims to make his living doing this by trading off the most active list (he seems to live well); his mantra is it doesn't matter if it's going up or down, use the technicals for your trend, and ensure you're out of all positions by market close. Also Online Trading Academy offers a week-long stock trading course for about $5000 that's very technically oriented. I think the lesson many have learned is that you have to know what you're doing here as many have tried and few succeeded consistently. In addition, it's a full time job.

Q: i just read the complete quarterly report on surge , it sounded so good i am tempted to jump in,especially with that 12.5 per cent yield, it seems like they could easily handle 40 dollar oil. what do you think. dave

Q: Just a follow up to surge. There was a $5 offer made in June when SGY was trading over $4. The CFO left because he thought the company should sell out but Paul Colbourne didnt like the offer. Time will tell if this was the right decision.

Q: Hi everyone,
On last nights market call Michael Smedley stated that stocks are going nowhere and are gaining one day but giving it all back and more the next. Even the good ones don't seem to be making any ground. He went on to say he feels this is now a bear market and other fund managers know this but are not admitting to it. What is your take on this and if we are in this malaise it could go on a lot longer than we expect ?

Q: The stock continues to fall like a stone, I'm in the red on this one, your last answer on this in July indicated you don't see bankruptcy in the immediate future and the government could possibly step in to protect bond holders if things continue to worsen.
Has your position changed on the last three weeks of news on BBD and what would be required of BBD for you to recommend it as a buy.
