“Some of the most effective hedging strategies the Goldman analysts found fell into the third category: combinations of stocks and non-bond diversifiers. In fact, the best diversifiers were mostly filtered baskets of stocks, such as the S&P 500 “low volatility” subindex, which includes the 100 least volatile stocks in the main index. A 50/50 split between this and the S&P 500 would, from 1996 to 2002, have generated nearly twice the annualised excess returns (over cash) of the S&P 500 index alone. So would a similar split with the S&P 500 “dividend aristocrats” index, which includes only companies that have increased their dividends every year for the past 25. Diversifying into “quality” stocks (with high returns on equity, stable earnings and low net debt) would have brought similar returns.
Today, the idea that the best way to hedge equity risk is with equities feels unsatisfying. Considering the alternatives, though, it might just be the best shareholders can do.”

What is to prevent an AI engine like Anthropic from simply buying a membership and then having access to that data with which to answer questions?

The above AI powered logistics tool news caused a havoc among most Trucking and Logistics stocks resulting a drop of 10-20 %, in Thursday's trade, giving back all gains of last few weeks. Dow Jones Transportation Index was down 4%, today.

Do you see this as a long term threat to the sector ?

I am curious to have your take on whether this news/AI scare could impact rail stocks also, in any way.

We were planning to initiate a position in CNR, but not sure, if the move warrants a caution in near term.

Q: Apparently the brokerages which deal in the gold trade were recently advised, by the regulator, to revise the allowable margin calculation. (based on gold holdings). This significantly reduced the allowable margin amounts. I understand that a letter from the regulator suggests that the reason for the change is that it views that the price of gold, and the volatility are too high. Too many investors might get hurt.
My question is: Is the regulator all that altruistic or are there geopolitical issues at play here which a prudent investor should be aware of?

Q: Terravest stock seems to be losing its lustre as a reliable compounder. Over past year, Co has not displayed much consistency with its earnings. One quarter is good then the next is not so much. Tariffs continue to haunt its prospects for growth and profitability.

Management has done well on acquisition front, but debts also continues to rise.

Stock has been in 5i portfolio for many years and has done well.

How many quarters, in your view, it could take for the Co to generate more confidence with investors ?
