Q: There were a couple comments today referring to a stocks yield based on the initial investment (which could 1 year ago or 10 years ago or more). I have seen this come up here before and on investment chat lines I follow. It seems to me that investment decisions should be based on the current situation (current yield, fundamentals, or whatever) and that yield on initial investment is somewhat meaningless other than as a pleasing way to view a successful investment. What am I missing? Could you comment?

Q: Hello 5i - I am soon to become a grandparent and would like to start a $1,000 portfolio the day the baby is born and continue contributing $1,000 on each birthday for the next 18 years. Which two stocks, or ETF(s), if that would be a better choice, would you suggest starting with?

Q: Hello 5i:
knowing this is one of your favourite funds in its category (I now own it), can you please advise something similar in the global space? Or, if possible, two funds/etf's; one which would include the US and one which would not.

Q: 5i team what would be your thoughts on adding some leveraged funds to my taxable account. The lending rate would be locked in at 2.99% for a year and then if no other promotional offers next year maybe in the 4% range after that. I would be investing the entire amount into ZDV with a dividend of 4.4%.

I can re invest the distributions monthly at no cost with Questrade. And the interest on the loan would be a tax write off.

How much of my portfolio would be the max to leverage (5%-20%) how long term should I be thinking to hold ZDV. Or any other candidates for ETFs?

Q: Good Morning! I am going to become a grandparent for the very first time in the next couple of weeks!! I would like to build a stock portfolio for my grandchild over the next 18 to 20 years, investing $1,000 each birthday year. Which two stocks (or ETFs, if you think that is better) would be excellent choices to begin a long-term portfolio the day the baby is born, with dividends reinvested through DRIP? Q: Hello,

I am considering buying a CAD-listed ETF such as XAW or VXC. Could you advise which account (RRSP, TFSA) I should hold the purchases to avoid or minimize withholding U.S. taxes on any dividends? I recall reading that buying a CAD-listed ETF of US/International stocks would not be sufficient to avoid US withholding taxes on any dividend. I am not sure if this statement is indeed accurate.
