Q: Hi Peter and Staff
Recently we have had one BNN guest whom I believe you respect a lot tout this as a top pick and another one say that they are exposed if Penn West does not make it due to large portion of revenue from them. Do you know how significant they depend on PennWest and would some other company not buy the Penn West production and be on the hook for the royalty agreement with Freehold?

Q: Thank you for all your guidance over the last year. Most helpful.
My undisciplined approach to buying and selling has led me into a 25% weighting in consumer discretionary and cyclical sectors and only 5% in utilities and tecom sectors combined. I'm nearing retirement and will depend on dividend income. Therefore I'm thinking I should sell some and buy the other. Out of BYD, XTC, CGX, CCL.B, ATD.B, DOL, MG, WPK which would you sell? Or would you just reduce all evenly? What are your favourite utilities/telecoms with good secure dividends at this time? I already hold half weighting in T, BEP.UN, ECI. Maybe increase those and add others like AQN, BCE, FTS?

Q: Happy New Year Peter and all at 5i.
Our diversification outside of Canada is through the 5i portfolio Canadian companies with such diversification (ATD, BNS, BOS, CSU, SJ, TCN etc). We don't have any US or Global domiciled stocks. Is this enough looking at 2016 or is it prudent to add some US or Global focus ? Also, we've always been impressed with Dennis Mitchell who now has 4 US/Global funds at Sprott. Though new funds, based upon Mr Mitchell's track record at Sentry, would you recommend any of these ? An alternative ? What percentage of a 5i based portfolio ? Q: HAppy New Year guys, was wandering if you could give me your top energy picks for small,mid and large cap companies for a 1-2 year hold,I realize this is a tall order as no one knows what the oil price is headed (hopefully higher somewhat in this timeframe)So could you put each picks emphasis low debt,quality management and growth potential and you can charge me 3 questions if you like thanks. Q: My son is starting to build is TFSA portfolio but, as yet, owns no technology stock. Which technology stock would you recommend for a hold of at least 1 year (who knows when he will need the money)? Any of the above or something different. Since he is not an experienced investor, stability is a consideration. Thank you and HNY to your whole team (it is a self-serving wish: if your year is good, it is likely to benefit all of your members)

Q: For 2015 it was most beneficial to be invested outside Canada. I calculate the cost of the Euro rose 6%, the Pound 12% and the U.S. dollar 13%.These are major changes. There seems to be a rush for investors to invest even more outside of Canada. In my mind if I look at a U.S. non hedged etf or mutual fund I would need to subtract 13% fx change off the posted return to get a pure equity, apples to apples comparison. Keeping in mind trying to play the fx guessing game is pointless, do you see a real danger in loading up on foreign equities after such quick and substantial devaluation of the Canadian dollar. When the Canadian dollar does turn around there will be significant drag on the non hedged returns.

Q: Hi,

I have cash to deploy, I cannot decide what to do about my energy stocks.

I have WCP (2.8%), TOU (1.8%), and BAD (3.5%)

I realize BAD is only about half exposed to energy.

My target for energy had been 10-12% with a max of 3 stocks. If you include BAD, I am currently at 8%. My full position for a stock is 4%.

Would you recommend I top up these stocks, or readjust my target for energy and wait for better times?

Q: Here is an easy question (or not). Are we in a bull or a bear market? Obviously oil and the base and precious metals are in a bear, but if we take them out, is the rest of the market in a bull market?

Q: I seem to recall reading somewhere that if the ROI is higher than the EPS this is positive for future share price growth. Using data from RBC Direct for DOL, the ROI is double the EPS. I take this as a positive sign for share price growth.

I am comparing DOL with GIL as I only want to keep one and based on the above I intend to sell GIL. Both companies have a rather high EPS.

Would you please comment on my analysis and do you agree with my conclusion?

Q: I plan to transfer 500 Bns shares from my cash account to my TFSA account.
I withdrew funds from my TFSA in 2015 and wish to replace these funds .
The record dare for the dividend is Jan 5/16 . I plan to make my transfer on Jan6/16
My question is , first is my dividend safe and will the dividend get paid to my TFSA account which is my goal . The dividend payment date for Bns is January 27/16
Lastly can you tell me how the swings in the Canadian dollar affects the price of the stock . If th C dollar falls to .68 cents what effect will this have on the stock price .
